Activating Your 3G Basic Phone or Smartphone

If you are upgrading from iPhone®, you must turn off iMessage® before activating your new phone: Settings > Messages > iMessage > Off.

Follow these instructions to activate your new or Certified Pre-Owned 3G basic phone or Smartphone. 

For steps on activating iPhone® 4, refer to the Activating iPhone 4 guide. For all other 3G Smartphones, refer to the steps below.

  1. Save contacts and media from your old device.

    Contacts and media will not automatically transfer to your new device. You will need to back them up so you can restore them later on your new device.

    Note: If you are new to Verizon Wireless, cannot access your old device or have already backed up your contacts using Backup Assistant, go to step 2.

    1. Back up contacts

      Refer to these instructions on how to back up contacts using Backup Assistant.

    2. Back up media

      You can back up pictures, videos and music by saving them to a memory card or with V CAST Media Manager1. Refer to the V CAST Media Manager website for more information on using this service.

  2. Activate your new device.

    Before activating your new device:

    1. Insert the battery.

    2. Charge the device.

    3. Power on the device.


    Android Smartphones

    To activate your Android Smartphone, follow the on-screen instructions on the device.

    Other 3G Basic Phones and Smartphones

    • Standard monthly plan customers (those who receive a monthly bill)

      1. Dial *228 and press Send.

      2. Press 1 and follow the prompts.

        Note: The on-screen instructions on some devices may ask you to press Send or Activate to activate.

    • Prepaid customers (those who pay for minutes ahead of time)

      1. Dial *22898 and press Send.

      2. Press 2 and follow the prompts.
  3. Restore contacts and media to your new device.

    1. Restore contacts

      Refer to these instructions on how to restore contacts using Backup Assistant.

    2. Restore media

      • If you backed up your media to a memory card, insert the card into your new device.
      • If you backed up your media using V CAST Media Manager, access the application and follow the prompts for restoring. Refer to the V CAST Media Manager website for more information on using this service.
