Activating and Setting Up iPhone® 5c and iPhone 5s - Existing Verizon Wireless Customers

This guide is for current Verizon Wireless customers who purchased iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s. If you’re a new Verizon Wireless customer, refer to the Activating and Setting Up iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s Guide for New Customers.

To activate and set up your iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s you will need to:

Step 1: Back up your contacts and voice mail messages
Step 2: Initiate 4G LTE Service
Step 3: Activate iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s
Step 4: Set up additional services on iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s

Step 1 - Back Up Your Contacts

Complete the following steps before you activate your new iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s in order to avoid losing your contacts.

Existing iPhone users:

  1. Sync your old iPhone with iTunes® or create a backup with iCloud®.

  2. Turn off your old device.

Existing Verizon Wireless customers not currently using iPhone:

  1. Back up your contacts
    Visit the Contacts Transfer Wizard and follow the instructions to save your contacts from your old phone.

  2. Visit to see if your old phone is compatible with Verizon Cloud and for instructions on saving your pictures, videos and more.

Step 2 - Initiate 4G LTE Service

Dial (877) 807-4646 from any phone other than your new iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s and follow the prompts to initiate your 4G LTE service. Have your Customer Receipt handy because you will be asked to confirm information from it.

Step 3 - Activate iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s

You can activate iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s wirelessly using your cellular connection or a Wi-Fi® connection or by tethering to your computer and using iPhone.

  1. Turn on iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s by pressing the On / Off button.

  2. Follow the Setup Wizard's on-screen instructions to select ‘Use Cellular Connection’ when you reach the activation screen.

    If cellular connection is not available, you can choose to activate you can activate by tapping ‘Connect to iTunes,’ or by selecting a WiFi network

      1. Ensure you have the latest version of iTunes. If you are new to iTunes, you will need to download the latest version from the Apple® website.

      2. Business and government customers: Please work with your IT department to ensure you are using an approved version of iTunes for your business or agency.

    • When prompted, review the Software License Agreement and, if you agree, click Agree to continue. Once activation is complete, a message will display on your iPhone.

    • Complete the remaining steps of the Setup Assistant, including restoring data from your iTunes or iCloud backup, if applicable.
    Note: It may take up to three minutes to complete activation.

    Step 4 - Set Up Additional Services on iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s

    Set up Voicemail

    1. Tap the Phone app on iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s.
    2. Tap the Voicemail tab and follow the prompts.

    Set up Wi-Fi

    1. Tap the Settings app on iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s.
    2. Tap Wi-Fi.
    3. Set Wi-Fi to ON and select a network from the list.
    4. Enter a password, if prompted, and tap Join.

    Transfer Contacts

    I have contacts on my Mac® or PC
    1. Sync with iTunes.
