iPhone® 5 FAQs

[FAQs]

General Information
  1. Will iPhone 5 work on Verizon Wireless' 3G or 4G LTE network?

iPhone 5 will run on our 4G LTE network - America's fastest 4G network. In areas where 4G LTE is not available, it will run on our 3G network - the largest and most reliable 3G network in the country.

  2. With my iPhone 5, am I able to make a call and browse the web at the same time?

You can make a voice call on the Verizon Wireless network and simultaneously browse the Internet over a public or home Wi-Fi connection.

The iPhone 5, as designed by Apple , does not support simultaneous voice and data on the Verizon Wireless cellular network.

New & Existing Customer Eligibility
  1. Can I transfer my mobile number from my current wireless service provider to Verizon Wireless?

In most cases, you can bring your existing number from your current wireless or landline service provider to Verizon Wireless. To check if you're eligible to transfer, or to check the status of a current port request, go to the Keep Your Number page.

You may be responsible to your old service provider for any contractual requirements and applicable charges, including an early termination fee, on your old account.

  2. Should I cancel my existing service before activating service with Verizon Wireless?

No, your number must remain active. Canceling your service prior to setting up an account with Verizon Wireless will prevent you from keeping your number.

  3. How long will it take to move my number to Verizon Wireless?

Moving your current mobile number to a new carrier generally should take no more than three hours to one day, but could take longer. Landline to wireless transfers generally should take no more than four days, but could take longer.

Processing time may vary depending on the complexity of the port, existing volumes between carriers and your old service provider.

  4. How will I know when the transfer of my phone number to Verizon Wireless is complete?

We will send a free text message to your device notifying you that your new service is fully activated.

  5. Do I need to sign up for a 2-year agreement when purchasing iPhone 5?

If you are purchasing iPhone 5 at the 2-year promotional price, a new agreement is required. However, you will also have the option to purchase the iPhone 5 at full retail price, which will not require you to sign a long-term agreement.

Note: Activation on a month-to-month agreement is required when purchasing iPhone 5 at full retail price.

  6. If I'm an existing Verizon Wireless customer and not currently eligible for an upgrade, will Verizon Wireless offer any special programs to allow upgrades to iPhone 5 at a reduced price?

If you are not eligible to upgrade, you can't upgrade at promotional pricing, but you can pay full retail price for a new iPhone 5. In addition, you may be able to take advantage of the Verizon Wireless Trade-In Program, which allows you to get value for your used device.

Using the Device Recycling Program website, you can determine in a few simple steps whether your used device has value, and if so, you can send the device in to receive a Verizon Wireless gift card.

Pricing
  1. Are there minimum service and data pricing requirements when purchasing iPhone 5?

If you are a new Verizon Wireless customer or an existing customer without a data plan, you will need to subscribe to The MORE Everything Plan that will give you Unlimited Talk, Unlimited Text and a single pool of Sharable Data for up to 10 devices on your account.

If you are an existing customer with a Nationwide Plan and data package, you can remain on your current plan.

  2. Can I upgrade from another Smartphone to iPhone 5 and keep my existing service and data pricing?

If you have an Unlimited Data package and purchase iPhone 5 at a discounted price, you'll need to choose from a calling plan with a new data package or The MORE Everything Plan. You also have the option to keep your Unlimited Data package and pay full retail price for iPhone 5.

If you don't have an Unlimited Data package, when you upgrade to iPhone 5 at discounted pricing, you can keep your existing plan or select from one of the current plans available.

Purchase
  1. I currently have an iPhone 5 with AT&T. Can I keep my existing version of iPhone 5?

No, you will need an iPhone 5 that works on the Verizon Wireless network. You may consider taking advantage of the Verizon Wireless Trade-In Program, which allows you to get value for your used device.

Using the Trade-In Program website, you can determine in a few simple steps whether your used device has value and, if so, send the device in to receive a Verizon Wireless gift card.

  2. Can I upgrade to an iPhone 5 even though I am not eligible to upgrade?

If you are not eligible to upgrade, you can pay full retail price for a new iPhone 5.

  3. Can I go to an Apple® Store to purchase and activate iPhone® 5?

Yes, you can visit an Apple Retail Store to purchase and activate iPhone 5. However, prior to visiting, please make sure to check your upgrade eligibility if you are an existing Verizon Wireless customer.

  4. Where is the closest store at which I can purchase iPhone 5?

Refer to the store locators below to find the store nearest you:

Content Transfer
  1. Will my existing voice mail transfer over when I activate iPhone 5?

No, all existing voice mail messages will be lost when transferring over to iPhone 5. Refer to the Saving Your Existing Voice Mail Before Activating iPhone page for more details and for step-by-step instructions on how to save your existing voice mail.

Note: If you are an existing Verizon Wireless iPhone customer switching to another Verizon Wireless iPhone, your voice mails will not be deleted.

  2. Can I transfer my content (contacts, photos, videos, etc.) when I activate iPhone 5?

Yes, Verizon Cloud's Content Transfer feature will help you transfer your content from your previous phone to your new iPhone 5. When you install the Verizon Cloud app (available in the Apple App Store) on your new iPhone 5, follow the instructions to transfer content.

Note: If your old phone is a non-Verizon phone (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, etc), you'll need to install the Verizon Content Transfer app on your old phone.

You can search for, browse, review, purchase and download iOS apps from the App Store directly from iPhone 5. Apps that you download and install from the App Store on iPhone 5 are backed up to your iTunes library the next time you sync iPhone 5 with your computer.

  5. Will any Verizon Wireless apps be available on iPhone 5?

Verizon Wireless apps are not pre-loaded. The following apps are currently available in the App Store for iPhone 5:

    • My Verizon Mobile
    • VZ Navigator
    • NFL Mobile
    • Verizon Cloud

We are also working on other apps for the App Store.

  6. What happens to any existing apps that I have purchased on my Verizon Wireless device after I switch to iPhone 5?

Although many of the same apps may be available on iPhone 5, any non-iOS apps already purchased on your existing device will not be transferred to your iPhone 5.

  7. Does Verizon Wireless carry accessories for iPhone?

    Yes, we do.

Apple, the Apple logo, and iPhone are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries.

  8. If I have iPhone® 4 or iPhone 4S and I’m switching to iPhone 5. Will all of my accessories be compatible?

The Lightning to 30-pin Adapter is available to connect iPhone 5 to legacy 30-pin accessories. This adapter is sold separately.

  9. Can I use iPhone 5 while traveling abroad?

You can use iPhone 5 for voice and text in more than 200 countries.

If you're an existing Verizon Wireless customer, you can add international service from the Products & Apps page in My Verizon or My Verizon Mobile. You can also visit a Verizon Wireless store or call Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 to add international service. Eligibility requirements may apply.

Please use our International Trip Planner when planning a trip with iPhone 5. It will provide you with pricing, dialing instructions and other key tips specific to your phone and the country you're traveling to.
