Mobile Email FAQs

General Information
  1. What is Mobile Email?

Mobile Email is a service that lets you use email with your basic phone. You can access your inbox and read, reply to, forward and delete emails just like you do on your computer. It also lets you know if you receive new email.

The Mobile Email app for Media Center / Get it Now on basic phones will be retired on 3/31/15. If you have one of these phones, you'll no longer be able to send and receive emails using the Mobile Email app. However, you may have several alternatives for sending and receiving emails on your current phone. Visit our Mobile Email App for Media Center / Get it Now Phones Alternative page for more information.

  2. How much does Mobile Email cost?

It depends on the plan you have:

    • The MORE Everything Plan , Nationwide Connect Plan and Nationwide Premium Plan Mobile Email is included at no extra charge.
    • Other plans Mobile Email costs $5 per month.
    • Prepaid Mobile Email is $6.99 per month.

Data usage is incurred while using Mobile Email which will count toward your data allowance. If you don't have a data plan, you'll be billed per MB of data usage.

  3. Which email services can I use on Mobile Email?

Mobile Email for basic phones currently supports many third party email service providers such as:

    • Yahoo! Mail
    • Gmail
    • Windows Live
    • Hotmail
    • AOL Mail
    • Microsoft Exchange accounts

You can configure your own POP3 and IMAP accounts also.

  4. How does Mobile Email affect my email experience on my computer?

You can be signed into your email account on your basic mobile phone and your computer simultaneously. When you delete, read or move emails using Mobile Email, the changes will be reflected when you sign in on your computer.

  5. Why am I having problems setting up my Microsoft® Exchange account on my basic phone?

To get access to Microsoft Exchange through Mobile Email, your company's IT administrator needs to give you the following information:

    • Microsoft Outlook web access URL (This is the same link that you use to check email using an Internet browser.) This URL must be open to the Internet.
    • Your domain name (if one is required)
    • Your Microsoft Exchange username (Your username may need to be entered as domain_name\username.)

You won't be able to access Microsoft Exchange through Mobile Email if you don t have the information above.

  6. Can I use more than one email account with Mobile Email?

Yes. Select your email provider from the list of options, and enter your sign in information. It will ask you if you want to add an additional account. If you choose yes, it will repeat the process.

  7. How do I add an email account to Mobile Email?

To add another email account to Mobile Email:

    1. Go to the Email home screen.
    2. Select Options.
    3. Select Add Account.
    4. Follow the prompts to sign in to your account.

Installing Mobile Email
  1. How do I install Mobile Email on my phone?

You can download Mobile Email from the Media Store. You can generally find the Email Category as follows:

    1. Open the Media Store or Media Center from your phone's menu.
    2. Select Tools on the Go.
    3. Select Get New App.
    4. Select Email.
    5. Select the latest version of Mobile Email to download.

  2. Where can I find Mobile Email on my phone?

Look for Mobile Email under "Messaging." Mobile Email should be found in the same category where you downloaded it from. This may be different for different devices.

  3. I'm being told to update my Mobile Email. What do I do now?

Whenever a new version of Mobile Email is released, you're prompted to update your Mobile Email. This may enhance existing features, introduce new features or add new email services. If your phone loses connectivity while updating, simply start Mobile Email again when you have a signal. If the update hasn't been completed, you'll be prompted again. The app will exit to download the updates. When it s done, start Mobile Email again.

Using Mobile Email
  1. How do I start using Mobile Email?

To start using Mobile Email on your basic phone:

    1. Open the Mobile Email app from your phone's menu.
    2. From the idle screen, navigate to Messaging and select Mobile Email.
    3. Select your email provider.
    4. On the sign-in screen, enter your user name and password.
    5. Select Sign In. If the user name and password you ve entered are correct and validated, you will see your inbox.

  2. How do I know when I have a new email using Mobile Email?

Mobile Email will give you a new email alert whenever you receive new messages. When you receive this alert, you can either dismiss it or open Mobile Email to check your inbox.

If you want to turn off the new message alerts:

    1. From Mobile Email, select Options.
    2. Select Settings.
    3. Select the Notify of New Mail check box to turn it off.

  3. Can I see, send or forward attachments using Mobile Email?

If there is an attachment, you will see a small paperclip icon beside the email. Mobile Email supports the following attachments for viewing: .jpg, .gif, .txt and .png. You may download other attachments and save them to your device. We strongly recommend that large attachments be saved to your memory card.

    To forward attachments:

    1. Select the email you want to forward.
    2. Select Options.
    3. Select Reply.
    4. Select Forward.

  4. I am seeing too much in data charges. How can I lower my data usage with Mobile Email?

Mobile Email consumes approximately 3 MB of data per month for moderate users using Personal accounts. To reduce your data usage:

    1. Open the General Settings.
    2. Select the Automatically Receive New Messages setting to turn it off.

  5. Are emails that I delete on my phone using Mobile Email really deleted from my inbox?

Yes. Deleting an email from Mobile Email is the same as deleting it on your computer. Typically, the deleted message will be moved to the trash/deleted folder.

The settings can't be changed so you can delete messages on your phone but not in your inbox.

  6. How can I get my contacts' email addresses to send an email using Mobile Email?

You can access them from the Home Screen by selecting Contacts. You can then enter the name you're trying to locate, which will search the local contacts on the device. If the contact isn't found, it will check the contacts in your online email providers, such as Yahoo! , Gmail and AOL .

  7. I changed my email password. How do I change the password in Mobile Email on my phone?

The next time you open Mobile Email, the app will notice that your password has been changed and prompt you for it.

  8. Are there spam filters in Mobile Email?

Mobile Email delivers the contents of your email account exactly as they are on your computer. If you have set the spam filters on, then they ll stay active on your mobile phone.

  9. How do I use signatures with Mobile Email?

The signature is typically a short personal message that includes your name, which is added at the bottom of each email you send. You can change the signature settings from the Mobile Email settings menu.

If you have it on, the signature you define in settings will show up inside the message box when you're writing an email. You can enter the signature data on a global basis (i.e., across all of your email accounts), or you can enter unique information for each account (i.e., use a different signature for each email account).

  10. Do all email accounts work in the same way while using Mobile Email?

No; if you are using a POP or IMAP account (e.g. or something defined using the "Other" category), depending on the service and your settings, the email service may have some limitations. For example, your emails may be downloaded and removed from the server, deletions may be permanent, and alerts may not be available.

  11. How do I delete an email account from Mobile Email?

To delete an email account from Mobile Email:

    1. Open Mobile Email and navigate to the main screen with a list of your accounts. You can get to this screen by pressing the Clear button until you get there.
    2. Select the account you want to delete.
    3. Select Options.
    4. Select Delete account.
    5. Select Yes to confirm your selection.

You've successfully deleted an email account from Mobile Email.

  1. Why am I getting a "Sign In Incorrect" error message when using Mobile Email?

If you receive this error message, try reentering your user ID and password on the sign in screen. Usually passwords are case sensitive, so it is important to use the correct capitalization.

If you've already tried reentering your account information, your account may require additional setup using your email provider's website.

You can call (800) 922-0204 for additional help.

  2. What has changed with my Microsoft Hotmail account for Mobile Email?

On 3/15/14, Mobile Email 4.0 and higher will be updated to address upcoming changes to Microsoft Hotmail. This update will result in the following changes:

    • Password prompt -- The first time you attempt to access Mobile Email, you'll see a popup box that will say your account requires a new password. Simply enter your existing Microsoft Hotmail password in the popup box to access your account. You will only have to enter your password on your initial access of Mobile Email following the update.

    • Email synchronization -- After the update, your email will sync every 5 minutes instead of real time.
