General Information
  1. What is the Verizon Wireless Network Extender?
    The Network Extender enhances indoor calling and 3G data coverage to provide better service for your Verizon Wireless mobile device. It’s an extension of our network placed directly in your house or small business office. The Network Extender is compatible with all Verizon Wireless devices and works like a miniature tower. It plugs into your existing high-speed Internet connection to communicate with the Verizon Wireless network, which makes it easy to install.

    Note: The Network Extender is not a router and therefore is not Wi-Fi capable.



  2. Where can I buy a Network Extender?
    You can purchase a Network Extender online or by calling (800) 256-4646. You must be an existing Verizon Wireless subscriber to purchase a Network Extender.


  3. Do I have to pay additional fees to use a Network Extender?
    No. There are no additional costs to use the Network Extender. You can simply purchase the unit and enjoy the benefit of enhanced in-home (or small business office) coverage.

    Note: All rates and policies associated with your calling plan will apply when connected to the Network Extender.


  4. Where can I use the Network Extender?

    The Network Extender works in many places within the Verizon Wireless coverage area but not outside the US. To find out if a Network Extender will enhance coverage in your location, visit a Verizon Wireless store or contact Customer Service at (800) 922-0204.

    Note: The Network Extender can enhance your calling or 3G data coverage. It's not designed to enhance 4G LTE data coverage.



  5. What type of Internet connection do I need for the Network Extender?

    Your Network Extender will work with most broadband or DSL connections (from Verizon or another Internet service provider). The minimum broadband speed required varies based on which Network Extender you have:

    • 1 Mbps to support voice
    • Up to 3.1 Mbps to support the maximum EVDO data rate for the Combo Network Extender (SCS-2U01)


  6. Will using a Network Extender affect my broadband Internet performance?
    It depends. The impact on broadband performance varies depending on your Internet service provider and the broadband speed.


  7. Does the Network Extender require a computer?
    No, the Network Extender requires a broadband Internet connection, but it doesn't require a computer to provide wireless coverage. However, you do need a computer (or other Internet device) to manage your device access settings through My Verizon.

    If you have a computer, it doesn’t need to be turned on to use your Network Extender.


  8. Can I connect my landline phone to the Network Extender?
    No, the Network Extender is only designed to work with Verizon Wireless mobile devices.


  9. Can I take my Network Extender with me when I travel?

    The Network Extender works in many places within the VerizonWireless coverage area but not outside the US. To find out if a Network Extender will enhance coverage in your location, visit a Verizon Wireless store or contact Customer Service at (800) 922-0204.

    Note: The Network Extender can enhance your calling or 3G data coverage. It's not designed to enhance 4G LTE data coverage.



  10. Can I make international calls while connected to the Network Extender?
    Yes, you can place and receive international calls while connected to the Network Extender. However, the same policies and rates that apply to international calls on your calling plan also apply while using the Network Extender.

  11. Is the Network Extender the same device as the Network Extender for Business?
    No, these two devices are different. While both the Network Extender and the Network Extender for Business provide the same enhanced functionality for calls and data on your mobile devices, the Network Extender for Business is made to handle the broader needs of numerous employees remaining connected to the network at the same time.
    • The Network Extender is designed to enhance the wireless coverage within a residential home or certain small business environments.
    • The Network Extender for Business is intended to support the specific calling and data needs of a business environment. By linking up to 5 units together, a business can give uninterrupted access to an ever growing number of devices at any given time.

Network Extender Setup
  1. How do I know that my Network Extender setup and installation is complete?
    You can confirm that the Network Extender setup is complete in either of the following ways:

    • Check the lights - Check that the various Network Extender components are functioning properly by confirming that the four LED lights on the front of the device are a steady blue (the WAN light may be either steady or blinking):
    PWR Power
    SYS
    System
    GPS GPS Signal
    WAN WAN (Ethernet) Connection

    It may take up to one hour to acquire a GPS signal and get a steady blue light. Turning off the Network Extender will restart the GPS signal process and may prolong the setup process. If the Network Extender doesn't acquire a GPS signal after one hour, and you’ve used the external GPS cable to position the GPS antenna near a window, please call Customer Service at (800) 922-0204.

    • Call to confirm - Call #48 on your Verizon Wireless mobile phone and listen for this announcement: “You are under Network Extender coverage.” That announcement verifies that the Network Extender is functioning properly and you're connected to it.

      When the Network Extender setup is complete, you may also want to set up priority access for up to 50 Verizon Wireless devices by visiting My Verizon.

  2. What are the meanings of the LED Status Indicators on my Network Extender?
    The LED status indicators on your Verizon Wireless Network Extender tell you if your device is functioning correctly. For more information refer to the Meaning of LED Status Indicators on the Verizon Wireless Network Extender page.


  3. Do I need to apply any settings to my mobile device in order to connect to my Network Extender?
    No. The Network Extender is compatible with all Verizon Wireless mobile devices. You don't need to change any settings on your mobile device.


  4. Why does the Network Extender need to be placed near a window?
    Placing the Network Extender close to a window will help in acquiring a GPS signal. If your Network Extender can't be placed near a window or has trouble acquiring a GPS signal, refer to the Network Extender User Guide (PDF*) for installation instructions on the external GPS cable. Using the external GPS cable also lets you place the Network Extender in a central location within your home, so you can get better coverage throughout your house.

  5. Why does a Network Extender require GPS service?
    The Network Extender uses GPS service to obtain time and device location information. Location information is used to support Emergency (E911) service.


  6. Is the external GPS antenna cable required for my Network Extender?
    No, the external GPS antenna cable is provided in the event that you can't acquire a GPS signal with the internal GPS antenna. Using the external GPS cable also lets you place the Network Extender in a central location in your home or small business so you can get better coverage throughout it.


  7. How do I install the external GPS antenna cable for my Network Extender?
    Instructions are included in the Network Extender User Guide (PDF*). You can also watch a short Network Extender Setup video for more information.

  8. Does GPS provide any additional services for my Network Extender?
    No, GPS is used strictly for Emergency 911 services. It does NOT do any of the following:



  9. Can I move my Network Extender within my house after it has acquired a GPS signal and setup is complete?
    Yes; however, we recommend that you set up the Network Extender in the place you intend to use it. If you must move the Network Extender, you should turn it off and re-initiate the setup process in its new location.

    Please keep in mind that moving the Network Extender away from a window may require the use of the external GPS cable.


Network Extender Management and Security
  1. Can I manage access to my Network Extender?

    Yes. The Account Owner can sign in to My Verizon to manage Network Extender access settings in My Verizon. You can leave your Network Extender on Open Access or switch to Managed Access.

    • Open Access: Any Verizon Wireless device within range can use your Network Extender signal
    • Managed Access: Devices you specify get priority access to your Network Extender (up to 50 Verizon Wireless numbers)
      • Devices with priority access are the only ones that can take the first 5 connections (of the 6 total) to the Network Extender.
      • The last connection will be given to a priority device when one is in the range of the Network Extender. If no priority devices are in range, and if the external Verizon Wireless network signal is totally unavailable, one non-priority device at a time may access the Network Extender.

      1. The Network Extender will periodically attempt to transfer non-priority devices connected to it to the external Verizon Wireless network.
      2. If an additional priority device needs access to the Network Extender, the non-priority device will be disconnected to give the priority device access.

      • All callers can access the Network Extender for emergency (E911) calls

    Note: Your mobile device must be within 15 feet* of the Network Extender to connect to it. Once connected, the mobile device can move up to 40 feet* away from the Network Extender and still be able to make a call or use data.

    *The coverage area required to establish an initial connection and the broader coverage area of the Network Extender can't be guaranteed and may vary due to environmental factors, such as physical structures and the strength of external tower coverage.



  2. How many devices can use the Network Extender at the same time?
    6 different devices can use the Network Extender at the same time. Note, though, that only 4 of these 6 devices can be using data (e.g., surfing the web, downloading email or apps) at the same time. Any and all of the 6 devices can use voice at the same time.


  3. If other devices use my Network Extender, will the minutes or data they use be charged against my account?
    No, the minutes and data used by each device connected to your Network Extender will be charged to the account associated with that device. You will see no extra charges as a result of others using your Network Extender.


  4. If other devices use my Network Extender, can my Internet Service Provider see the websites visited or other activities of that device?
    No, your Internet Service Provider can’t see any of the activities of the devices that are connected to your Network Extender.


  5. Do specific ports need to be enabled on my router or firewall for the Network Extender to work?
    No, the Network Extender uses standard IPSec ESP VPN ports to make its connection through the Internet. It shouldn't require any special port configuration.

    In those rare instances in which the Network Extender can't connect to the Verizon Wireless network, you may need to open ports 500, 4500, 53 and 52428. Contact your ISP, Network Administrator or switch/router/firewall manufacturer for detailed instructions on how to open ports on your equipment.


  6. Will users of my Network Extender be able to intercept or listen in on each other’s conversations?
    No, all calls using the Network Extender are private and secure for all callers (even those not on the priority list). Callers using the Network Extender benefit from the same security and privacy as the Verizon Wireless network.


Using Network Extender
  1. How do I connect to the Network Extender network?
    Each time you want to connect to the Network Extender, you’ll need to be within 15 feet* of it to establish an initial connection with its network.

    Once you’ve connected to the Network Extender network, you can move within a broader coverage area (40 feet from the Network Extender or up to a 5,000 square foot area). You can make and receive calls as usual as long as you stay within the Network Extender coverage area.

    *The coverage area required to establish an initial connection and the broader coverage area of the Network Extender cannot be guaranteed and may vary due to environmental factors, such as physical structures and the strength of external tower coverage.



  2. How do I know if I'm connected to the Network Extender network?

    There are two ways to verify that you're connected to the Network Extender network:

    • Call #48 from your mobile phone to hear an announcement

    • Listen for a short double tone on your mobile phone whenever making or receiving a call

    • Some devices have a visual indicator


  3. Will my phone disconnect when I move from my Network Extender coverage area to an outside area?
    No. Your call will continue uninterrupted when you move outside of the Network Extender coverage area (as long as you have enough signal strength from the external Verizon Wireless network at your location).


  4. Will a call placed outside of the Network Extender coverage area transfer to the Network Extender network?
    No, calls initiated outside of the Network Extender coverage area are not transferred when entering the range of the Network Extender network. You'll need to end your call to connect to the Network Extender.


  5. Will my mobile device pick up the Network Extender network or the Verizon Wireless network based on signal strength?
    Yes, your device will automatically connect to the network with the best signal.

    If you're registered with the Network Extender and are within the Network Extender coverage area when you initiate or receive a call, your mobile phone will use the Network Extender network. If you move beyond the Network Extender coverage area, your call will seamlessly transfer to the Verizon Wireless network provided that coverage is available.

    If you're registered with the Verizon Wireless network when you initiate or receive a call, your mobile phone will use the Verizon Wireless network.


  6. Will the Network Extender affect the number of bars that appear on my mobile device?
    Yes. Once your mobile device is registered with the Network Extender, you'll notice the number of bars for the 1X icon and EV icon may increase.


  7. Does the Network Extender place less drain on my mobile phone battery?
    Yes. You may experience less drain on your mobile phone's battery when connected to the Network Extender.


  8. What happens to my Network Extender if I lose my connection to the Internet?
    The Network Extender requires an active broadband Internet connection. You won't be able to use Network Extender functionality until your Internet connection is restored. When your Internet connection is restored, the Network Extender will reestablish its connection.


  9. Will my call quality be impacted if I'm uploading or downloading large files while using the Network Extender?
    Call quality can be affected when your broadband connection is being used simultaneously by bandwidth intensive apps (e.g., emailing large attachments). Factors such as the type and speed of your broadband connection will influence the impact to call quality.


  10. Can I use Directory Assistance (411 Search) with Network Extender?
    Yes. 411 Search is available when calling inside the Network Extender coverage area. Calls are billed at standard 411 Search rates.


  11. Can I use more than one Network Extender in the same home?
    Placing multiple Network Extenders in a single home is not advised. Interference can occur when Network Extenders are placed close to one another.


  12. What does it mean when I get the “All Circuits Busy” message when I try to make a call using the Network Extender?
    The “All Circuits Busy” message means that all 6 available channels on your Network Extender are in use. We recommend that you set up your Managed Access settings in My Verizon to give priority access to your household members.


Billing
  1. Do I have to pay additional fees to use a Network Extender?
    No. There are no additional costs to use the Network Extender. You can simply purchase the unit and enjoy the benefit of enhanced in-home coverage. All rates and policies associated with your calling plan will apply when connected to the Network Extender.


Network Extender for Business
  1. Is the Network Extender the same device as the Network Extender for Business?
    No, these two devices are different:

    • The Network Extender is designed to enhance the wireless coverage within a residential home.

    • The Network Extender for Business is intended to support the specific calling and data needs of a business environment.
