Verizon Edge FAQs

[FAQs]

General Information
  1. What is Verizon Edge?

Verizon Edge is a program that provides you the flexibility to upgrade early and pay for your device over 24 months rather than paying for it all upfront. You'll make a monthly payment until your device is paid off.

After 30 days, if you've for paid at least 75% of the Edge device, you'll have the option to Edge Up to a new device without any upgrade fees.

To be eligible to Edge Up, your original Edge device must be returned in good working condition and have no significant damage as determined by Verizon Wireless.

Note to customers with Edge Agreements signed prior to 6/1/14: You'll keep your 24-month Edge Agreement, and you'll have the option to Edge Up to a new device after paying 50% of the original device and returning the original device to us in good working condition.

Note to customers with Edge Agreements signed between 6/1/14 and 10/15/14: You'll keep your 20-month Edge Agreement, and you'll have the option to Edge Up to a new device after paying 60% of the original device and returning the original device to us in good working condition.

  2. What are the benefits of Verizon Edge?

    With Verizon Edge, you can:

    • Enjoy the latest technology available by upgrading your device more frequently
    • Upgrade without additional fees or finance charges
    • Purchase a new device and pay for it monthly
    • Get more with Verizon Edge on The MORE Everything Plan . Customers on The MORE Everything Plan are eligible to receive up to $25 off their monthly line access charges each month.

  3. Who is eligible for Verizon Edge?

To be eligible for Verizon Edge, your device must be eligible for an upgrade and:

    • Existing customers of 7+ months must have a good payment history with us during the prior six months.
    • New and existing customers of 6 months or less must pass a credit check.
    • You must have a standard monthly agreement with Verizon Wireless.

Note: Verizon Edge is not available to business customers who sign a Major Account Agreement (MAA).

  4. I'm an existing Verizon Wireless customer and received a letter about not being eligible or having to make a down payment for Verizon Edge. How can I become eligible?

Because Verizon Edge is an installment agreement to pay for equipment over time, we check for financial good standing on any account in your name. If you're not currently eligible for Verizon Edge, there's a variety of ways to qualify for this type of equipment payment option:

    • If your account(s) has (have) had returned payments and your payment options have been limited to cash only, you can become eligible for Verizon Edge by paying your balance in full each month for the next 6 months.

    • If your account(s) balance(s) is (are) past due $25 or more when you applied for Verizon Edge, you'll need to pay off all balances in full to become eligible.

    • If you have any unpaid account(s) with Verizon Wireless that has (have) been disconnected for non-payment and referred to an outside collection agency, you can become eligible for Edge by making payment in full to satisfy the debt.

    • If your account(s) has (have) been suspended for non-payment within the last 6 months, you'll need to pay your bill in full for the next 6 months in order to qualify for Verizon Edge.

    • If your original activation credit decision resulted in your having to pay a security deposit which we're still holding on your account, you'll need to pay your bill in full each month for 1 year from when the deposit was originally paid.

Note: You may also be eligible for Verizon Edge by paying a down payment within the first 6 months of service with Verizon Wireless based on the original activation credit decision when you opened your account.

  5. I'm up-to-date on my account, how come I can't add another device on Verizon Edge?

Verizon Wireless has maximum limits on equipment charges that customers can defer on their monthly bills based on an evaluation of financial good standing. If your equipment upgrade or line additions resulted in the maximum limit being reached, you may need to select other equipment payment options or make an optional down payment to lower the total amount financed.

  6. What devices are eligible for Verizon Edge?

All Verizon Wireless smartphones, tablets and basic phones are eligible for Verizon Edge.

Note: Device bundles are not included. All other devices (Jetpacks, modems, etc.) are not eligible for Verizon Edge.

  7. How much does Verizon Edge cost?

Verizon Edge monthly payments will vary depending on the price of the device, but there's no finance fee or upgrade fee to join the program. For payment examples, visit the Verizon Edge page in the Shop link at Verizonwireless.com.

  8. Can I add insurance to a Verizon Edge device?

Yes. You can purchase insurance and other equipment protection services to guard against loss, theft, accidental damage, and certain post-manufacturer warranty defects.

  9. As an existing Verizon Wireless customer under a service agreement, can I participate in the Verizon Edge program?

Yes, you can participate in the Verizon Edge program provided you are upgrade eligible and enter a Verizon Edge Agreement.

  10. Is the Verizon Edge program available for prepaid accounts?

No, prepaid accounts aren't currently eligible for Verizon Edge.

  11. As a Verizon Edge customer, am I eligible to receive any service pricing discounts?

Yes. For smartphones purchased with Verizon Edge, you get $15 off your smartphone monthly line access on The MORE Everything Plan of less than 6 GB, and $25 off the monthly line access on plans with 6 GB or more.

For example, if you have 2 smartphones on your plan with 6 GB of data, monthly line access with a typical 2-year contract would be $80. If you purchase both smartphones with Verizon Edge, you will save $25 per phone for a total savings of $50, bringing the monthly line access fee to $30.

  12. Can I make a down payment when I buy a new device with Verizon Edge?

Yes, you can make a down payment to reduce your monthly Edge payment. However, the total down payment can't exceed 75% of the full retail price of the device.

Note: To participate in the Verizon Edge program, some customers may be required to make a down payment based on credit criteria.

  13. How many Verizon Edge Agreements can I have on my account?

You can have a Verizon Edge Agreement for up to 10 devices on your account, as long as you don't exceed the Edge program's spending limit.

  14. I just purchased a new device using Verizon Edge. Why does my bill look higher than normal?

There are two reasons why your first bill after signing up for Edge might be higher than normal:

    • Prorate Charges - If you upgraded an existing line and did a price plan change, you may have price plan charges and credits that went into effect the day you upgraded.

    • Sales Tax - Most states require sales tax on the full retail price paid by the customer, which in most instances will be charged at the time of the first invoice.

Note: Customers who purchased devices in AL, AZ, CO, IL, NM, ND or SD will be billed taxes and surcharges monthly as payments are made.

    Your bill will normally include:

    • Your last Edge installment payment
    • The next Edge installment charge
    • If you are on a MORE Everything Plan, a monthly access discount for each qualifying line.

The details of Edge installments and discounts can be viewed at the line level portion of your bill under Monthly Charges and Equipment Charges, or in My Verizon, My Bill then Charges By Line.

Contract and Payment Plan
  1. Does the Verizon Edge program require an agreement?

Yes, when you participate in the Verizon Edge program, you will enter a 24-month Verizon Edge Agreement. However, this agreement is different from traditional 2-year service contracts because you can upgrade after 30 days with Edge, provided you have paid for 75% of the device and return your existing device in good working condition. Customers must have and maintain a Verizon Wireless service agreement when they purchase a device under Verizon Edge.

Note to customers with Edge Agreements signed prior to 6/1/14: You'll keep your 24-month Verizon Edge Agreement, and will have the option to Edge Up to a new device after paying 50% of the original device and returning the original Edge device to us in good working condition.

Note to customers with Edge Agreements signed between 6/1/14 and 10/15/14: You'll keep your 20-month Edge Agreement, and will have the option to Edge Up to a new device after paying 60% of the original device and returning the original device to us in good working condition.

  2. Can I pay more than my scheduled monthly Verizon Edge installment?

No, unless you are either seeking to Edge Up to a new device, which requires that at the time of the Edge Up transaction you pay at least 75% of the device (50% for customers with an Edge Agreement entered prior to 6/1/14, 60% for customers with an Edge Agreement entered between 6/1/14 and 10/15/14) following the initial 30 days of the Verizon Edge Agreement; or you are seeking to pay off 100% of your Verizon Edge Agreement, which you may do at any time.

  3. How can I view the remaining balance of my Verizon Edge device?

Your remaining Edge balance is listed on your bill, and online in My Verizon.

Note: You won't have the option to pay additional amounts beyond your monthly payment toward your outstanding Verizon Edge balance, unless you're exercising the Edge Up option or paying off 100% of the balance.

  4. If my Verizon Edge device is lost, stolen or damaged, will I still need to make my monthly payments?

Yes, you'll continue to be responsible for your monthly payments under your Verizon Edge contract. Verizon offers handset insurance and other device protection services to help protect your Verizon Edge device.

  5. If I voluntarily suspend service to my device, am I still required to pay for my Verizon Edge device?

Yes. If you voluntarily suspend service to your device (with or without billing) you will still receive a monthly statement with your Verizon Edge charges. The charges are due according to the payment schedule included on your Verizon Edge agreement. If you cancel all lines on your account, all remaining Edge balances will be applied to your next monthly statement.

Note: If your line is suspended under our military service policy, you won't be billed Verizon Edge payments during the military suspension (limit for military suspend is 3 years and 90 days) and your payments will resume upon your return from military service.

  6. If I voluntarily disconnect service on my tablet, am I still required to pay for my Verizon Edge device?

Yes. If you voluntarily disconnect service to your tablet, the remaining balance will be due in full on your next bill.

Edge Up and Returns
  1. What is the Edge Up option under Verizon Edge?

Edge Up allows you to turn in your existing Edge device and purchase a new device without an upgrade fee. You must meet the other Edge Up eligibility requirements in the Verizon Edge Agreement to use this option.

  2. What are the eligibility requirements to Edge Up with Verizon Edge?

To be eligible to Edge Up, you must:

    • Have had your Edge device for at least 30 days
    • Have paid at least 75% (50% for customers with an Edge Agreement entered prior to 6/1/14 or 60% for customers with an Edge Agreement entered between 6/1/14 and 10/15/14) of the full retail price of the device
    • Return the Edge device in good working condition with no significant damage, as determined by Verizon Wireless

  3. What types of replacement devices will be accepted when I seek to Edge Up?

When you Edge Up to a new Edge device, you must provide to Verizon Wireless one of the following in good working condition, as determined by Verizon Wireless:

    • The original device purchased under your Verizon Edge Agreement
    • An authorized replacement from an approved Verizon Wireless channel (e.g., Certified Like-New Replacement, AppleCare or a Verizon Wireless authorized insurance replacement device)

Note: Tablets cannot be returned as substitution for phones and phones cannot be returned as substitution for tablets.

Apple and AppleCare are registered trademarks of Apple Inc.

  4. How do I Edge Up when I'm ready?

There are four ways that you can Edge Up:

    • Bring your original Edge device (or authorized replacement) to a Verizon Wireless retail location where a representative will help you complete the Edge Up process.
    • Complete the Edge Up process online using My Verizon.
    • Call Customer Service at (800) 922-0204 and they'll help you complete the Edge Up process over the phone.
    • Visit a Verizon Wireless authorized retailer offering the Edge program.

If your previous phone is an iPhone with iOS 7, you must disable Find My iPhone prior to sending it back. To disable Find My iPhone:

    1. Tap Settings.
    2. Tap iCloud.
    3. Tap Find My iPhone.

You've successfully disabled Find My iPhone.

Note: If you use My Verizon or Customer Service, you'll need to ship your original Edge device (or authorized replacement) in good working condition to Verizon Wireless using the shipping label provided when you complete the Edge Up process. You'll be billed for the new device when you Edge Up, as well as the remaining balance owed for your original Edge device. However, once it's determined by Verizon Wireless that your original Edge device was returned in good working condition, you'll receive a credit for the remainder owed on the original Edge device.

  5. Are Verizon Edge devices subject to Verizon's Return and Exchange Policy and a 1-year warranty?

Yes. Verizon Edge devices are covered by these policies.

Note: Once you return your previous Edge device, you can't get that device back.

Learn more about Verizon's Return Policy.

  6. If I return my Verizon Edge device under the Return and Exchange Policy, will I have to pay a restocking fee?

Yes. A restocking fee of $35 ($70 for tablets) applies to any return or exchange of a wireless device (excluding Hawaii).

Note: There is no restocking fee when you turn in your device using the Edge Up option.

  7. If I Edge Up and then decide to return my new device within 14 days, can I continue making payments towards the original device under my old Edge Agreement?

No. Once you exercise the Edge Up option, your old Verizon Edge Agreement is terminated, and you're responsible for returning your old Edge device in good working condition within 14 days of your receipt of your new device.

  8. I am eligible to Edge Up, but I'd rather upgrade my device under a 2-year service agreement rather than a Verizon Edge Agreement. Can I sign up for a 2-year service contract to get a new device if I continue to make my monthly Edge payments?

No. If you're currently under a Verizon Edge Agreement, you can't also sign a 2-year service contract. You can, however, Edge Up by paying off 75% (50% for customers with an Edge Agreement entered prior to 6/1/14 or 60% for customers with an Edge Agreement entered between 6/1/14 and 10/15/14) of the device's full retail price and then turn it in for a new device under a 2-year service agreement. If you don't wish to Edge Up you must  pay off the remaining balance of your Verizon Edge device, either in full or according to the scheduled monthly installments. After your Edge device is paid off, you can purchase a new device under a 2-year service agreement.

  9. I paid off 100% of my Edge device. Can I trade it in and use the trade-in value toward the cost of a new device under a new Verizon Edge Agreement?

Yes. You'll receive the value for the trade, and you can use the balance towards the purchase of your new device, to purchase accessories, or to pay your Verizon Wireless bill. However, you may not use the trade-in value to reduce the retail price of the new Edge device.

  10. How can I transfer my photos, videos, contacts and messages when I Edge Up to a new device?

Backing up your device with Verizon Cloud makes it easy to take your content with you when you Edge Up to a new device.

Plus, with The MORE Everything Plan, you can get 25 GB of cloud storage at no additional charge.

Learn more about how it works on our Verizon Cloud overview page.
