Celebrate Valentine's Day with the gift of virtual reality

While experiencing new adventures in wonderful places together is one of the joys of being in love, this February 14 you can do that without ever leaving your home. Virtual reality headsets and compatible hardware will let you and your sweetheart head off to tropical paradises, tour romantic cultural spots or even take a spin around the solar system.

Take off on some virtual travels with:

Google Daydream View (2017): This fabric-encased headset for Google’s Daydream VR platform is compatible with a variety of Android smartphones (including Google’s own Pixel 2). It gets high marks for comfort and improves on the previous version with a tighter fit and a wider field of view. “The material is textured almost like canvas, the strap is firmer and the inside lining (removable facepad)...is softer and more comfortable,” Digital Trends reports. With the Daydream app installed and the headset’s controller in hand, you are all set to use Google Play VR apps like Gala 360 to enjoy the beauty of national parks or Hello Mars to drive a rover around that planet. Chromecast compatibility means the virtual trips can display on a TV screen, too.

Samsung Gear VR with Controller: Perfect for a couple who share an attachment to each other and to Samsung Galaxy smartphones, this version of the device includes a controller that provides more seamless virtual experience responses to human movements. “This pack-in is a critical part of the setup, and it opens the doors to more comfortable and more advanced play experiences,” reports Stuff. The Gear VR was developed with VR leader Oculus, and sweethearts benefit from the latter’s regular introductions of new experiences – among them a Smithsonian Journey to Venice (gondola ride included)! Samsung offers a VR video service, too.

Samsung Gear 360: With this compact and portable device, you can record spherical 360-degree videos in 4K resolution – perhaps you and your soulmate’s stroll along the shell-strewn beaches of Sanibel island (yes, it’s water-resistant). After you’ve returned home from your real-life getaway, be enveloped in the experience  again by viewing your videos from all angles through VR headsets including the Samsung Gear VR.  “Samsung is treading forward in making 360-degree videos more accessible than ever,” writes TechRadar

Options like these can make a virtual Valentine's Day as special as any that a couple can enjoy in the "real" world.
