Consumers are storing valuable personal information like passwords, credit card numbers and bank account details on their mobile devices. While having this information readily accessible is convenient, steps must be taken to ensure the information on your device is secure.

Just last year, incidents of mobile hacking doubled, not to mention that $7 million worth of smartphones go missing each day around the globe.

Misplacing a smartphone or tablet is frustrating enough without the threat of personal data being compromised. The first line of defense for a smartphone or tablet is to set a screen lock. Depending on the device, options range from a facial recognition feature or a pattern, personal PIN number or alphanumeric password, all of which will make it more difficult for someone to access the main menu and information stored on the device. For backup, download recovery tools to locate lost devices and remotely lock them to ensure the safety of sensitive information.

Smartphone and tablet customers can help protect their devices from hackers by utilizing security software such as Lookout, which offers automatic anti-virus technology to block malware, spyware and Trojans and scans every app downloaded.

Also, Verizon Wireless recently launched a Mobile Security App for Android. The app, which combines the security capabilities of Asurion and McAfee, allows you to remotely locate, alarm and lock a misplaced or lost device for a low monthly fee.

When the time comes to upgrade, wiping the old device before selling, donating or recycling it ensures no personal information will be passed along. Start by backing up all information on the phone so you can access it on your new device. Then, log out of all accounts and apps; delete stored passwords, information and media; and, finally, restore the device to the original factory settings and remove any SIM and SD memory cards.
