MEXICO CITY — With a commemorative phone call placed between the Santa Fe section of Mexico City and the nearby community of Tlalnepantla, Grupo Iusacell officially inaugurated its new digital wireless network today, marking the first phase of a 12-month $200 million network modernization plan that will introduce consumers to the newest benefits of wireless service.

The new Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network uses digital coding to provide more efficient use of radio spectrum and offers increased capacity, greater call quality and enhanced security and privacy. Calling features such as Caller ID, advanced voice mail, short text messaging and paging are also possible using the new digital technology.

Iusacell is a wireless communications company in which Bell Atlantic has a 42 per cent interest and management control of operations.

The inaugural call was placed by Fulvio del Valle, president and director general of Iusacell, from the company's headquarters building to a network facility in Tlalnepantla.

The company said it was making the first step toward a $200 million network modernization plan, which would be completed over the next 12 months, making CDMA service widely available in Mexico's Regions 5, 6, 7 and 9.

"This new digital service provides exceptional voice quality, as well as the innovations and services that our customers have come to expect from a world class service provider," noted del Valle.

The company plans to market the service with new dual-mode wireless handsets, allowing customers to be served by both the company's digital and analog networks.

Grupo Iusacell is the leading independent telecommunications company in Mexico. It is the wireless service provider in four of Mexico's nine central regions covering a total of 66 million people, representing 70 per cent of the country's total population.

Bell Atlantic - formed through the merger of Bell Atlantic and NYNEX - is at the forefront of the new communications and information industry. With 40.5 million telephone access lines and six million wireless customers worldwide, Bell Atlantic companies are premier providers of advanced wireline voice and data services, market leaders in wireless services and the world's largest publishers of directory information. Bell Atlantic companies are also among the world's largest investors in high-growth global communications markets, with operations and investments in 21 countries.
