GREENVILLE, SC — Jerald M. Fountain has been named Vice President of Bell Atlantic Mobile's Southeast Region. Fountain will be responsible for an extensive wireless communications network and retail store channel for the region, which includes North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

Prior to his new appointment, Fountain served as regional Vice President of Bell Atlantic Mobile's Pittsburgh market, a position he had held since 1992. "Jerry has done an impressive job of growing our customer base in the western Pennsylvania market, even in the face of some of the stiffest competition our company has seen," said Jack Plating, executive Vice President and Chief Operation Officer of Bell Atlantic Mobile. "I'm extremely happy that Jerry is eager to build on his success in his new region."

Fountain will lead more than 725 employees in the Southeast region.

Fountain began his career in the telecommunications industry as a sales associate for Motorola in 1978 and later moved to Metromedia Paging Services, where he was the company's Washington, DC, sales manager. In 1985, he became general sales manager for A Cellular Company, which was purchased by Bell Atlantic in 1986. Fountain served in a number of Bell Atlantic Mobile sales positions in the Washington area before eventually being promoted to director of sales and operations in that market. Fountain earned a degree in business administration from the University of Maryland in 1978.
