PITTSBURGH, PA — When Bell Atlantic Mobile cut the ribbon for its new Cranberry Township Communications Store today, the company did more than open the doors for business. At a dedication ceremony this morning, Bell Atlantic Mobile reaffirmed its commitment to "give back" to the communities where it does business with a donation and employee gifts to the Volunteers Against Abuse Center of Butler County.

"We've moved into Cranberry Township and Butler County in two ways today," explained Roger Tang, regional vice president for Bell Atlantic Mobile in Pittsburgh. "Our newest Communications Store offers shoppers a full-service location for all their wireless needs. And, as a new business resident in Cranberry Township, we are reaching out to assist residents in the community."

Bell Atlantic Mobile presented a donation of $1,500 to the Volunteers Against Abuse Center of Butler County to support the shelter in assisting victims of domestic violence. To complement that corporate support, Bell Atlantic Mobile Pittsburgh employees gave more than 1,500 diapers and toiletry items to the shelter for the "littlest victims."

Over the last few weeks, employees conducted a "diaper drive" to collect items needed for the infants and toddlers who, with their mothers, seek assistance at the shelter. This is the second year the local employees have held such a campaign. Last year's gifts were given to victims at a Pittsburgh shelter. To celebrate the opening of the store in Cranberry Township, employees chose to give the items to the Butler County shelter this year.

Elizabeth Clark Smith, executive director of the Volunteers Against Abuse Center of Butler County, Inc., said this donation and the employee gifts will greatly enhance the assistance they can provide to the women and their children.

"We are thrilled to have Bell Atlantic Mobile working with us to ease the burdens these women face," Smith said. "The diapers and toiletry items are critical to our daily operations. The generosity of the employees in meeting the needs of these children is greatly appreciated."

Since last fall, women residing at the shelter have been using Bell Atlantic Mobile's HopeLine, a free wireless voice mail service, which provides the women with a link to potential employers, housing and additional social services. Tang said the expansion of Bell Atlantic Mobile's support for the shelter combined the company's overall commitment to assist victims of domestic violence with the Pittsburgh's Region's ongoing commitment to the local communities the company serves.

Joining Tang in today's ribbon cutting were State Senator Melissa Hart, State Representative Daryl Metcalfe, Butler County Commissioners James Kennedy, Glenn Anderson, and William McCarrier, and Kari Ambrass, executive director of the Cranberry Area Chamber of Commerce.

Bell Atlantic Mobile's new Cranberry Township Communications Store, located on Route 19 at Brandt Drive, is open Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The full-service store has certified technicians on staff to install, test and repair equipment.
