Burlington, VT — Verizon Wireless, formerly Bell Atlantic Mobile, today launched digital wireless service in the Burlington area. The new state-of-the-art technology offers consumers and business customers, a long list of benefits, including enhanced call clarity, longer battery life and enhanced privacy.

Customers in Burlington can also be among the first to sign up for Verizon Wireless' Mobile Web, a new offering that provides easy-to-use wireless access to the Internet and the option to customize the information delivered to web-enabled digital handsets. A customer can receive an alert when a stock hits a certain price, make a trade, send and receive e-mail and buy books and CD's.

"Residents and visitors to Burlington will be able to enjoy clearer calls with less background noise and longer battery life on their wireless phones," said Bob Stott, regional president of Verizon Wireless. "We are excited to deliver to Burlington customers the benefits of digital service - in a nutshell, more for less -- while also offering wireless Internet access. This technology opens up a world of possibilities for everyone."

Now that both digital and analog service is available, customers with dual-mode (analog/digital) phones will be able to take advantage of digital service immediately. At the same time, analog customers will continue to enjoy their existing coverage, and have the option to upgrade to a digital phone to enjoy the features and benefits of digital service.

The expansion of Verizon Wireless' digital coverage area in Vermont is part of the company's $4 billion investment in improving its extensive wireless network for 2000. The company announced this during its April launch, to support its simple, national, affordable product strategy.

According to Stott, more than 70 percent of the company's new customers in New England are opting for digital service because of features like static free reception, caller identification, voice mail, message waiting indicator, three-way calling, call waiting and call forwarding.

Verizon Wireless offers six SingleRatesm calling plans (starting at $35.00 monthly access for 150 minutes) to fit customers' various needs. Those plans offer no roaming or long-distance charges. In addition to expanding the wireless network and reducing prices for digital wireless services, Verizon Wireless has also introduced its lowest priced Internet-capable digital phone to date at $39.99 (after a $30.00 mail-in rebate) for a Qualcomm QCP-860. To sign up for service, customers can visit a Verizon Wireless Communications Store (South Burlington, VT) or call 1-888-466-4646.
