OVERLAND PARK, Kansas — Domestic violence is not just an epidemic that affects the family. It reaches far beyond the home into every facet of the victim's life, including the workplace.

Verizon Wireless, known for its corporate leadership in the fight to end domestic violence, has teamed up with the Rose Brooks Center in Kansas City to help drive awareness and prevention in the local community.

To recognize National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, representatives from Rose Brooks Center are hosting several informational sessions at area companies during October. Verizon Wireless is supporting the effort by providing stark, hard-hitting posters that depict how domestic violence victims try to hide their scars and bruises by wearing sunglasses or a turtleneck sweater.

"Verizon Wireless wants employers and co-workers to recognize the possible signs of domestic abuse and know where to turn for help," said Kirk Golbach, president for Verizon Wireless in the Kansas/Missouri region. "The posters steer people to the toll-free National Domestic Violence Hotline and are designed to let victims know they are not alone in their fight.

Verizon Wireless also is donating $3,000 to the Rose Brooks Center to support Project SAFE, an anti-violence program and support group in the schools that addresses substance abuse, dating violence, domestic violence, self-esteem, and sexual harassment for students grades K through 12.

"Project SAFE currently provides 80 support groups for approximately 400 individual students meeting every week in the Greater Kansas City area," said Sara Lissauer from Rose Brooks Center. "The donation from Verizon Wireless will help us continue to expand our support groups so we can work to end violence in the lives of young people."
