HONOLULU — Verizon Wireless has launched digital service on the islands of Kauai, Maui and Hawaii, providing customers with advanced digital features such as Caller I.D. and access to Internet services such as Mobile Web. In conjunction with the launch of digital service, Verizon Wireless has announced that it will join with Motorola to donate 20 digital phones and free airtime to Child and Family Services domestic violence prevention counselors on these islands in an effort to lessen the toll of domestic violence on local families. The donation is part of the Wireless Foundations' Call to Protect program, a national educational and philanthropic initiative.

"Digital service opens up a world of new possibilities for wireless users on Kauai, Maui and Hawaii," said Tony Simpson, regional president, Verizon Wireless. "In addition to providing outstanding wireless voice quality, extended battery life and improved privacy, digital service enables data services like Mobile Web and new, enhanced features such as caller identification, message-waiting indicator and numeric paging through the handset."

Simpson added that in opening the door to digital service for Kauai, Maui and Hawaii, Verizon Wireless also wanted to open a door to greater safety for domestic violence victims and the counselors who serve them. The donation of airtime and phones by Verizon Wireless and Motorola will provide domestic violence counselors with an additional tool to help combat domestic violence within Hawaii. The wireless phones, which can be carried by counselors while visiting victims at their homes, will help ensure the safety of counselors and victims during potentially dangerous situations. "Wireless phones alone cannot solve the problem of domestic violence, but we hope by providing a tool for on-the-spot communications we can help counselors provide even greater assistance to women and families and, at the same time, enhance their safety," said Simpson. "Wireless phones can, and do help people improve personal and community safety every day."

"Motorola is pleased to apply its long history in wireless technology to help save lives through the Call to Protect initiative," said Denise Gibson, Vice President and Director of Customer Technical Solutions, Motorola. With one-third of American women reporting abuse at some point in their lives, domestic violence is an epidemic that can affect anyone and also impacts the workplace. That is why Verizon Wireless also recently committed to raise awareness of domestic violence within the workplace by offering companies across the country hard-hitting posters designed for display in offices to encourage employers to help employees affected by domestic violence.

Verizon Wireless' sponsorship of the national poster campaign is part of the company's participation in The Corporate Citizenship Initiative (CCI) on Domestic Violence, a first-of-its kind national project that brings together leadership teams that will link business, government, labor leaders, victim advocates and state domestic violence coalitions to develop workplace-based programs to stop domestic violence. Employers interested in obtaining posters for the workplace may visit the Family Violence Prevention Fund at www.fvpg.org.

"Through employee volunteerism, executive leadership, and its commitment to domestic violence prevention organizations, Verizon Wireless is working to inspire businesses throughout the nation to join the fight against domestic violence," said Simpson.
