SPOKANE, Wash — Verizon Wireless has donated $2,500 to support the Special Olympics of Eastern Washington. The money is being used to purchase training equipment for the Spokane Iron Pumpers, a Special Olympics weightlifting team.

The Special Olympics program offers individuals with mental retardation or a closely related developmental disability the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other athletes and the community.

"Making a difference in the lives of our athletes is only possible with the generous support we receive from the community and corporate partners such as Verizon Wireless in Spokane," said Kathleen Crowell, director of development and community relations for Special Olympics in Washington.

"Verizon Wireless is committed to the belief that the right connection can change a life," said Robert Duron, local manager for Verizon Wireless in Spokane. "Special Olympics is a very worthwhile organization that helps strengthen connections between people and we're glad to get involved and support its efforts."

The donation was made through the Verizon Wireless Community Relations program. For more information or for a grant application, please call (425) 603-7955.
