SEATTLE, WA — Helping to fight the regional energy crunch, Verizon Wireless is unplugging two of its three outdoor 35-foot building signs along the I-90 corridor in Eastgate, saving 48,000 watts a day.
"With more than 1,500 employees and six office buildings in Eastgate, we are anxious to do our part to save energy in the Northwest," said Kelley DeLaney, president for Verizon Wireless in the Pacific Northwest Region. "While our brand recognition is certainly important, the needs of the community come first. Turning off the outdoor signage at our headquarters location is just one of the steps Verizon Wireless is taking to conserve energy within our business."
Verizon Wireless also is forming an internal Energy Savers group that will provide conservation leadership throughout the company's 430,000 square foot Eastgate campus. The team will encourage employees to turn off computers and lights when not in use and will evaluate employee suggestions collected through EnergySavers@VerizonWireless.com, an internal e-mail suggestion box.
To achieve greater energy efficiency, the company is developing a broader energy conservation plan that will analyze lighting systems, heating and ventilating controls.
"Governor Locke has asked each of us to do our part to identify energy-saving measures," said DeLaney. "We challenge other businesses to find ways to conserve energy and make a difference in the community," said DeLaney.
Kelley DeLaney will host an official "Lights Out" ceremony on Tuesday, February 20 at 6 p.m. in the Verizon Wireless parking lot located at 15800 SE Eastgate Way.
