NASHVILLE, TN — Verizon Wireless recently announced that the company's Midsouth region donated $20,000 to NashvilleREAD as part of its continuing efforts to support literacy programs.

NashvilleREAD is dedicated to teaching children how to read through learning programs based around fun activities, including phonics and word-pattern games. Trained volunteers work with local public school students in grades one through three, mainly in low-income areas of the city. The Verizon Wireless donation will go directly to NashvilleREAD's volunteer department, an area of the non-profit organization that is constantly in need of funding.

"We are truly excited to work with NashvilleREAD and to be able to donate money to such a worthy organization," said Rick Gall, president-Midsouth region, Verizon Wireless. "Helping literacy programs is an initiative that we wholeheartedly support, and we are pleased that our donation will be used where it is most needed."

NashvilleREAD will use the Verizon Wireless donation to help pay for training expenses, purchase recruitment materials for volunteers and teaching materials for tutors.

"The children are learning to read while having fun in our programs," said Angie Brix of NashvilleREAD. "It's very rewarding, both for the student and for the tutor. But we cannot continue our programs without the help of companies such as Verizon Wireless. This donation will go to part of our organization that does not receive much funding."
