NASHVILLE, TN — Verizon Wireless today announced its plans to host a Drop-N-Swap event on April 20, which will benefit local domestic violence victims.

Drop-N-Swap invites Middle Tennesseans to drop off their deactivated wireless phones and chargers at 14 area Verizon Wireless retail locations and the activation fees and programming fees will be waived when they upgrade or buy a new wireless phone. The cost of activation fees to the consumer is usually around $20. The donated wireless phones will be given to the Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and the victims they serve, so they can call for help in an emergency.

"We at Verizon Wireless want to do whatever we can to assist Middle Tennessee's domestic violence victims," said Paula Durham, Verizon Wireless' associate director of retail sales for Middle Tennessee. "Our partnership with the Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence enables us to make a difference in the lives of the victims."

Verizon Wireless is also offering a 10 percent discount on wireless accessories to persons who bring in $5 gift certificates to Kroger or Wal-Mart or any monetary donation.

"We hope that giving the wireless phones to domestic violence victims will allow them to feel a little safer," said Dovie Coleman, domestic violence specialist with the Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. "We are grateful to Verizon Wireless for helping us in such a crucial way."

According to research, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to United States women between the ages of 15 and 44 - more than car accidents, muggings and rapes combined.

The Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence is a non-profit organization composed of diverse community leaders and program members who share a common vision of ending violence in the lives of Tennesseans through public policy, advocacy, education, and activities which increase the capacity of programs and communities to address violence.
