CHICAGO, IL — As we approach the Memorial Day weekend, the official beginning of the summer travel season, Verizon Wireless is offering eight safety tips to launch "Wireless Safety Week," May 21-27.

  • Always use hands-free devices to allow you to keep your eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel.

  • Unless you are expecting a call, consider turning your phone off and letting calls go to voice mail while driving.

  • Make calls when your car is not in motion by pulling off the road to a safe place to make or receive calls.

  • Never look up phone numbers or take notes while driving.

  • Pre-program important and frequently dialed numbers with home, family members' and emergency contact numbers so you can dial them by pressing only a few buttons.

  • Avoid engaging in distracting conversations. Emotional conversations are likely to divert your attention from the road.

  • Use your wireless phone to call for help. Dial 9-1-1 in case of fire, traffic accidents and other emergencies or road hazards.

  • In an emergency, provide important information. Be sure to give your name and wireless phone number, including area code, your location or a major landmark, and the details of the situation.
