WALLINGFORD, CT — The staff at the local Verizon Wireless Communications Store was recognized today for their efforts in assisting victims of domestic violence. The Manchester Community Service Council (MCSC) honored them with the 2001 Volunteer Recognition Award for helping the Interval House with a wireless phone drive. The collective efforts of the Interval House and Verizon Wireless store personnel will allow hundreds of domestic violence victims instant access to 9-1-1 with a touch of a button.

"Domestic violence is everyone's business. (Store Manager) David Feinberg and his staff used their business to make a difference in the lives of victims of domestic violence by lending support and helping our organization raise awareness in our community," said Penni Micca, a domestic violence outreach representative for the Interval House. "To battered women, the phones serve as an emergency lifeline and have proven to be a deterrent when an abuser knows a phone is in the hand of the victim."

Last year, the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Verizon Wireless, The State of Connecticut and local police departments joined forces to collect, refurbish and distribute these donated wireless phones for victims in their communities.

"Verizon Wireless is dedicated to serving our communities, and I am proud of the work our staff has done in this community in taking these steps to reducing and hopefully eliminating this important social problem," said Bob Stott, president of Verizon Wireless' New England Region.

By embracing a philosophy of commitment to the community, Verizon Wireless focuses primarily on putting wireless products and services to work to combat domestic violence. In addition to domestic violence prevention, the company's community relations activities extend to assisting in public safety, disaster relief, and numerous non-profit causes close to the communities it serves.
