MILWAUKEE, WI — Although its products are primarily known for their mobility, Verizon Wireless devoted its afternoon Thursday, July 5 to making "house calls".

The company distributed several hundred complimentary Summerfest tickets through personal visits at three Milwaukee area community organizations, including two well-known area homes for needy children and families.

The series of house calls began with the presentation of tickets to residents of the Sojourner Truth House. The facility is Milwaukee's oldest and largest domestic shelter for battered women and children.

"This is a natural extension of Verizon Wireless' ongoing corporate commitment and our local work involving domestic violence prevention," said Mary Shully, advertising manager for Verizon Wireless. The company provides emergency phones to area shelters in Milwaukee and Madison. Through another corporate initiative, Verizon Wireless provides posters and related materials to the local business community to build awareness in the workplace for the ways to detect and prevent domestic violence. In late June, the company also served as corporate sponsor the Annual Brewers' Wives Tailgate, a benefit for Sojourner Truth House.

Later in the day on July 5, Verizon Wireless hosted a "Big Gig" pizza party at the Ronald McDonald House in Wauwatosa, serving pizzas and handing out 125 Summerfest passes to families staying at the house. Located at 8948 Watertown Plank Road, the facility provides a "home-away-from home" for out-of-town families who are in Milwaukee for extended medical treatment for a child.

"The time at Summerfest served as a mini-vacation and an inviting taste of Milwaukee for these out-of-town guests," Shully said.

A third ticket give-away took place at the offices of the Strive Media Institute, 1818 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, Milwaukee, for students participating in this innovative communications program. Strive Media Institute is a non-profit mentoring and training program, helping Milwaukee youths to learn and develop marketable skills through meaningful experiences in the field of mass communications.

Verizon Wireless, the largest wireless communications provider in the United States, is the official wireless communications provider and a sponsor of Summerfest 2001.
