BEDMINSTER, NJ — In an industry first, Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, announced it has upgraded its network to support next generation technology for enhanced wireless voice capacity in parts of Metro New York and Northern New Jersey. Known as 1XRTT, this next generation network infrastructure technology will significantly increase the voice capacity of Verizon Wireless' premier digital wireless network once 1XRTT-compatible handsets become available. The company anticipates 1XRTT-compatible wireless handsets will be available for customers to purchase from Verizon Wireless Communications Stores or online at http://www.verizonwireless.com in the fourth quarter.

With 1XRTT voice technology, Verizon Wireless will support growing usage demands in its existing spectrum by significantly increasing the digital capacity while enhancing the ongoing reliability of its networks in Northern New Jersey and Metro New York. The company plans to upgrade to 1XRTT in additional markets later this year and into subsequent years. 1XRTT will enable Verizon Wireless to accommodate growing demand for voice service while the company continues to pursue essential, additional radio frequency spectrum.

Verizon Wireless anticipates a fourth quarter rollout of 1XRTT high-speed mobile data access. When rolled out, this upgrade will increase data-transmission speeds up to 144 kilobits per second (kbps), nearly ten times faster than generally available today. This increased performance should improve the customer's experience with the growing portfolio of Verizon Wireless' data applications and support the introduction of new data applications.
