GALESBURG, IL — Verizon Wireless will donate 25 emergency 9-1-1 phones and a check for $1,000 to Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center, Ltd., to commemorate the Knox County agency's 9th Annual "Take Back the Night Rally" on Thursday, Oct. 25. All rally activities will focus on domestic violence and personal safety issues, and will be held at the Galesburg Community Center, 150 East Simmons Street.

Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center is a non-profit community agency that provides confidential help to individuals who are experiencing verbal, physical or sexual violence in their relationships. The agency offers a variety of services to victims and their families: court advocacy, a 24-hour crisis hotline (309-343-SAFE), an emergency safe-house, counseling and support groups, emergency transportation, clothing and food, social service referrals, community education and children's programs.

"We sincerely appreciate Verizon Wireless' contributions and commitment to domestic violence awareness," said Kathy Richardson, Executive Director for Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center. "Safe Harbor is making strides in the community, but we cannot do it alone. That's why it's wonderful to know our agency has the support of others, like Verizon Wireless, who understand our goal. We try to educate the public so we can break this vicious cycle of behavior, and also provide the tools necessary for others to escape the violence in their lives. Everyone deserves a safe home."

Safe Harbor will loan the wireless phones to clients the agency feels have an immediate risk of being assaulted or who are otherwise in danger.

Candy Webb, manager of the Verizon Wireless Communications Store in Galesburg, will present the company's donation to Safe Harbor at approximately 6:25 p.m. the evening of the rally. "For many years now, Verizon Wireless has participated in phone donation programs for shelters and related organizations, offered monetary contributions and worked with civic and business leaders to spread the word about the damaging effects of domestic violence," said Webb. "We commend Safe Harbor and the many agencies like it throughout the country which provide a lifeline for domestic violence victims. We are grateful to have the opportunity to help them and hope our contributions are making a difference in the lives of people who face difficult circumstances."

The rally will begin at 5 p.m. with a Community Resource Fair. Guest speaker presentations will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by survivors' stories and an open "speak-out." The evening will conclude with a candlelight vigil. T-shirts, food and beverages will be on sale throughout the rally. All proceeds will be donated to Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center and will directly benefit its clients in Knox County.
