Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Verizon Wireless Collect Thousands of Phones for Victims

PITTSBURGH, PA — More than 3,000 used wireless phones were recently collected in a drive conducted by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV) and Verizon Wireless. That equipment is now on its way to a recycling center in Michigan so that refurbished phones can be given to survivors of domestic violence throughout Pennsylvania to enhance their safety.
The one-week drive helped launch the new Verizon Wireless HopeLineSM program through which individuals, on a continuing basis, can drop off used wireless phones at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores to be recycled for victims.
"PCADV's network of 62 programs is excited to join Verizon Wireless in this new wireless phone recycling effort and eagerly awaits the new supply of wireless phones for battered women," said Susan Kelly-Dreiss, PCADV executive director.
Roger Tang, president of the Ohio/Pennsylvania Region, Verizon Wireless, said the one-week drive was conducted to draw attention to how wireless technology can help victims of domestic violence and to highlight how easy it is for consumers to recycle used equipment to benefit others.
"On an ongoing basis, our Communications Stores will have permanent HopeLine displays where wireless users can continue to recycle unused phones," Tang said.
South Hills Movers, headquartered in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, donated a portion of their services to pick up the phones at Verizon Wireless Communications Stores and domestic violence shelters throughout the state and transport the equipment to the recycling center in Michigan.
