NEW YORK, NY — Continuing its commitment to domestic violence prevention and awareness, Verizon Wireless this week introduced a series of seminars in New York City to help victims of domestic violence develop and hone the skills they need to compete for jobs in today's marketplace. The new initiative was offered for the first time this week in Manhattan at a transitional housing shelter, run by Safe Horizon, and serving families from all five boroughs.

Called "Invest in Yourself," the program consists of seminars that focus on employment topics, such as interviewing, communications, networking and preparing effective resumes. The seminars, part of the company's self-development course curriculum for employees, are offered on shelter premises by Verizon Wireless female employees with experience in human resources, marketing and management.

Gordon J. Campbell, Safe Horizon's chief executive officer said, "Verizon Wireless is providing incredibly valuable tools to the women in our domestic violence shelters with this program. Once again Verizon Wireless is demonstrating how corporations can make a difference in the lives of those in crisis."

"For victims of domestic violence, beginning a job search is one of the first steps toward rebuilding their lives," said Annette Lowther, associate director of human resources, of Verizon Wireless' New York Metro area. "By making these seminars available at women's shelters, we hope to equip them with the confidence and skills they need to land a job and become independent."

Verizon Wireless is a corporate leader in the fight against domestic violence. Since 1995, through its HopeLineSM community service program, the company has donated or recycled more than 45,000 phones in the New York Metro area. Shelter directors interested in scheduling a seminar or more information may call 845-429-3839.

In addition to the employment seminars, Verizon Wireless employees at the company's Orangeburg, NY offices have raised funds to sponsor a holiday party for families housed at the Queens Oasis, an emergency shelter for women and children touched by domestic violence. More than $1,600 raised at office book and bake sales will provide food, entertainment and gift certificates for 25 families.

Editor's Note: Interviews with residents or directors at Safe Horizon may be arranged upon request.
