PENSACOLA, FL — Due to rapidly advancing technology, millions of wireless customers regularly upgrade their wireless phones and have old, unused handsets that could be used by domestic violence victims to summon help in a threatening situation. What better time than the holidays for Pensacola residents to give the gift of a lifeline by donating that old wireless phone through HopeLineSM at Verizon Wireless' two new Pensacola stores.

HopeLine is a national phone recycling program that collects used wireless phones, and then provides refurbished or new handsets to domestic violence victims. Proceeds from phones that are recycled and sold will be used to purchase the new handsets and to support non-profit domestic violence advocacy organizations.

"Surveys indicate that one-third to one-half of U.S. women will fall victim to domestic violence during their lifetimes," said Sue Hand, Director of FavorHouse battered women's shelter. "One way Escambia County residents can help is by donating a used wireless phone to HopeLine. It may seem like a simple gesture, but if it saves one life, it is a huge accomplishment."

Verizon Wireless established its support of FavorHouse and will work with the agency to raise awareness of the need for used wireless phones. The company presented FavorHouse with a $500 check and will work with the agency to fulfill its clients' needs for wireless phones.

"For domestic violence victims who are trying to safeguard themselves against an abuser, communication - also the foundation of our business - is the key to safety," said Katherine Greene, regional president of Verizon Wireless. "In times of crisis, a HopeLine phone may be the only connection a victim has with emergency personnel, and we're honored to make this a priority within our organization and the community of Pensacola."

Any domestic violence shelter or organization can request phones by calling 1-800-323-3513, extension 5101. All phones and accessories are accepted at the Pensacola store, and donations are tax-deductible.

A recognized corporate leader in the fight against domestic violence, Verizon Wireless has long collected and recycled phones; however, this program is first-of-its kind in that it is exclusive to Verizon Wireless and reaches many smaller communities, including Pensacola.

For more information about HopeLine, customers can call 1-800-426-2790 between the hours of 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM EST Monday through Saturday, and between 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM EST on Sunday. Customers can also visit the Web at http://www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.
