MILWAUKEE, WI — Margaret Thatcher, Britain's first woman Prime Minister, will open the 2002 Unique Lives & Experiences series in Milwaukee, an annual event sponsored for the second year in a row by Verizon Wireless.

Five lectures by extraordinary women will comprise the 2002 Unique Lives & Experiences program lineup. They will begin on February 25 with a lecture by Lady Thatcher and conclude June 11 with a presentation by entertainment superstar Whoopi Goldberg. Other leading national and international figures in the 2002 series include:

  • March 18, Marie Osmond, singer, actor, author, talk show host and co-founder of the Children's Miracle Network.
  • April 17, Lynn Johnston, creator of the "For Better or For Worse" comic strip.
  • May 7, Mavis Leno, national chair of the Feminist Majority Foundation's Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid who has been actively involved in the restoration of women's human rights in Afghanistan.

All presentations will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Milwaukee. Each two-hour program includes a presentation from the guest lecturer followed by a period for questions and answers from the audience.

As part of its sponsorship, Verizon Wireless will have an informational display on site each evening of the series that will feature special materials on local and national initiatives to increase public awareness and reduce instances of domestic abuse. The company also will collect previously owned wireless handsets to be refurbished, recycled and/or sold as part of its HopeLineSM program that directly benefits victims of domestic violence. "We are pleased and proud to play a part in bringing these distinguished leaders to Milwaukee for a series that promises to be informative and enjoyable for all in attendance," said Tracy Nolan, regional president for Verizon Wireless.

She added, "The company is especially pleased to use this sponsorship to stand behind our long tradition of helping to heighten awareness of the severity of domestic violence and offer information that may help someone who is in an abusive situation or who knows someone who is. Domestic violence is truly an issue that affects individuals, families and businesses everywhere."
