BEL AIR, MD — The Maryland Knights of Columbus donated 369 used wireless phones today to help launch the Verizon Wireless HopeLineSM phone recycling program in Harford County, at the company's Communications Store in Bel Air. All phones collected will be refurbished, recycled or sold, and either phones or cash will be donated to local domestic violence agencies, like the Sexual Assault/Spouse Abuse Resource Center, Inc. (SARC), and the victims of domestic violence it serves.

The phones were collected by members of the Father Maurice J. Wolfe Council (11372) of the Knights of Columbus between January and March 2002.

In addition to naming SARC as a local beneficiary of the HopeLine phone recycling program, Verizon Wireless also donated six wireless voicemail boxes to the non-profit domestic violence prevention group. The voicemail boxes will provide SARC clients with a confidential means to receive and retrieve messages from prospective employers and landlords as they rebuild their lives.

To ensure the Hopeline program can serve as many victims as possible, the public is being encouraged to join the effort by dropping off no longer used wireless phones in the HopeLine collection bin at the Bel Air Verizon Wireless Communications Store, located at 2 Bel Air South Parkway. Phone donations are accepted during regular business hours (Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm, Saturdays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sundays 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm). All donations are tax deductible and receipts are provided.

"We want to thank Grand Knight Frank J. Tumminello and the Father Wolfe Council of the Maryland Knights of Columbus for helping launch HopeLine in Harford County in a very meaningful way," said Robert Milton, director of Communications Stores for Verizon Wireless in the Washington/ Baltimore/Virginia Region. "We are also pleased today to welcome SARC as a HopeLine partner and look forward to working together to help victims of domestic violence."

An exclusive Verizon Wireless program, HopeLine collects wireless phones that are no longer in use. The proceeds are used to support domestic violence prevention groups in various ways including through the purchase and donation of voicemail boxes, new phones and airtime for emergency use by domestic violence victims.

"As a company, Verizon Wireless is committed to helping prevent domestic violence and abuse," said Kelly Maul, manager, Bel Air Verizon Wireless Communications Store. "The HopeLine program enables us to put our products and services to work to combat domestic violence and provides a convenient means for people to recycle used wireless phones to benefit victims in Harford County."
