GREENVILLE, SC — Verizon Wireless, the nation's leading provider of wireless communications services, announced it added 15 new digital sites in North and South Carolina during the first quarter of 2002 as part of its continuing effort to provide superior service to its customers.

The new sites are located in major markets like Greenville, Charlotte, Raleigh and Charleston as well as smaller owns like Tobaccoville, N.C., and Rowesville, S.C. They are the result of Verizon Wireless' ongoing efforts to enhance its digital network -- the largest in U.S. -- and enhance its coverage and call reliability.

"Verizon Wireless invested more than $100 million in the Carolinas last year to ensure our customers continue to benefit from having access to the nation's largest, most dependable wireless network," said Frank Cairon, executive director of network for Verizon Wireless' Carolinas Region. "These new sites are part of our overall commitment to providing the highest-quality, most technologically advanced digital network possible."

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $8 billion nationwide in the last two years to enhance its network. The company's network engineers drive nearly 100,000 miles and place more than 50 million test calls each year to measure reliability and identify opportunities for service enhancement. Since Verizon Wireless' network covers more of the U.S. than any of its competitors, customers on the company's America's ChoiceSM plan enjoy access to a network that covers 90 percent of the U.S. population, with no roaming or long-distance charges.

Further, Verizon Wireless relies solely upon CDMA technology - considered one of the most reliable wireless communications platforms -- for enhanced clarity and dependability.

Additionally, Verizon Wireless is the first major carrier to deploy a sizable, third-generation high-speed data wireless network. The company's 1XRTT Express Network, which offers customers even more advanced data services and faster transmission speeds, is available in roughly a third of the company's footprint serving 72 million potential customers, with additional markets to be introduced throughout the year.
