WESTMINSTER, MD — As the Baltimore Ravens open their 2002 season with training camp at McDaniel College, their fans will be first in the nation to get up-to-the-minute news directly from the Ravens via text messaging on their Verizon Wireless phones. "Coach's Corner," launched today by the Baltimore Ravens and Verizon Wireless, lets fans sign up through the team's website to receive the latest team news, scores, game-day traffic reports, game highlights and more.

"We try to set the standard in everything we do," said Ravens Team President David Modell. "To be the first team to use this technology with Verizon Wireless keeps us ahead of the curve and gives our fans more access and something special."

Coach's Corner alerts were first tested at Ravens' Stadium during the 2002 Spring Football Festival on April 20, 2002, the first day of the National Football League's draft weekend. The Ravens sent out 24 alerts with details on each draft pick as it was made.

Ravens Head Coach Brian Billick said, "Our fans always want more information about the team, and this service will get it to them quickly and efficiently."

The team itself provides the content for Coach's Corner alerts directly to Ravens fans who have Verizon Wireless digital phones and who 'elect to receive.'

The alerts are delivered to phones after users set-up the alert through Verizon Wireless' vtext.com simple-to-use short text messaging website. Vtext.com makes it easy to send messages to individuals and groups and lets customers set up cool and useful information alerts, like Coach's Corner.

To send alerts, the Ravens use the Internet and a web-based authoring tool to enter up to 160 characters per alert of breaking news about the team and personnel, updates on game day, pre-game scouting reports, post-game comments and special offers during the season.

Each alert costs two-cents to receive and fans may choose how often they want to get alerts. For fans who want the full benefits of two-way text messaging, packages are available with 100 to 600 messages a month for $2.99 to $6.99.
