MILWAUKEE, WI — The Green Bay Packers potent offense this season will score points that will help increase awareness and help to reduce instances of domestic violence.

Verizon Wireless today announced it will again donate $25 to domestic violence shelters and organizations for every point scored by the Packers throughout the course of the 2002-03 NFL season. The program, called "Protection Is the Name of the Game," originated in 2001 and raised $10,800 during the season and playoffs. The Packers' successful showing last season resulted in an average per game payout to a domestic violence agency of $600.

"We are pleased to continue this valuable program that assists victims and builds on the successes of the Green Bay Packers all the way to the Super Bowl. It's going to be an exciting season," said Tracy Nolan, president of Verizon Wireless' Wisconsin/Illinois Region.

"Protection Is the Name of the Game" is the latest step Verizon Wireless has taken in Wisconsin to increase awareness of domestic violence and reduce its occurrence. To date, the company has donated more than 300 emergency phones for domestic violence victims at Wisconsin shelters, produced and distributed public service announcements, conducted seminars for business leaders, and hosted promotional awareness-building events with Wisconsin professional sports teams.

Verizon Wireless later this season will team with the Packers in collecting used wireless phones that will be refurbished and sold, with proceeds given to domestic violence shelters.

"Domestic violence is a multi-faceted problem. That's why we are conducting a number of awareness-building events," said Nolan. "We will continue to provide ongoing, direct support and assistance to domestic violence agencies and distribute awareness-building communications that arouse the interest and involvement of the general public."
