Mendham High School Service Club And Verizon Wireless Team Up To Recycle Cell Phones

MENDHAM, NJ — The Service Club at Mendham High School will launch a new project at "Back To School Night" on Wednesday, September 25th, when they begin a wireless phone recycling program with Verizon Wireless to benefit victims of domestic violence and help dispose of old wireless phones in an environmentally-safe way.

The club will provide envelopes and shipping labels at "Back To School Night" for parents, teachers and fellow students to use for donating their no-longer-used wireless phones to the Verizon Wireless HopeLineSM Recycling Program. Those who wish to donate a phone simply take home an envelope, insert the wireless phone and then drop it off at a Verizon Wireless Communications Store.

"This program allows the students to take an active role on two fronts: they can help people dispose of old phones responsibly and, at the same time, make a difference for victims of domestic violence," said Kathy Fritz, a parent at Mendham High School, who suggested the program to the students. "The Service Club is making it easy and convenient for the school community to recycle their wireless phones."

All phones collected will be refurbished, recycled or sold, and either phones or cash, will be donated to non-profit domestic violence agencies. All wireless phone models from any carrier will be accepted.

Phones to be recycled may be dropped off at any Verizon Wireless Communications store. Those in the vicinity of Mendham are located at: Bridgewater Commons Mall, The Mall at Short Hills, Rockaway Townsquare Mall, Route 10 in Succasunna, 756 Route 202 South in Bridgewater and in Flemington at 300 Routes 202/ 31.

In addition, Service Club members will collect phones throughout the year at the school and deliver them periodically to Verizon Wireless Communications stores in the area.

"The HopeLine Phone Recycling program is a way for community-minded citizens to support domestic violence organizations as they help abused women re-build their lives," said Charles Hand, president of Verizon Wireless' New York Metro Region. "Domestic violence does not discriminate. It's all around us in places most of us would never imagine. Students who support the program could very well be helping their own friends or neighbors."
