CHICAGO, IL — Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless provider, and the Chicago Cubs are teaming up to invite fans to help victims of domestic violence in our community.

On Saturday, September 28, 2002, used wireless phones and accessories will be collected for the Verizon Wireless HopeLineSM program at the Verizon Wireless kiosk/booth inside Wrigley Field beginning at 1:05 p.m. (gates open) through game time.

Through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program, used wireless handsets, batteries and accessories from any carrier are refurbished, recycled, and/or sold. Proceeds are donated to non-profit domestic violence advocacy organizations and used to purchase handsets for domestic violence victims, including those within Chicagoland.

"Together with the Cubs, we've created a winning situation," said Tracy Nolan, president of Verizon Wireless' Illinois/Wisconsin Region. "It's important that domestic violence prevention and advocacy agencies and the victims they serve have access to the HopeLine program."

The HopeLine drive is just one part of a broad, season-long program that Verizon Wireless and the Cubs organization have put into play.

The program also includes:

  • Safe at Second, Safe at Home - Verizon Wireless is donating $25 for every double a Cubs player hits during the 2002 regular baseball season to Cubs Care, which supports domestic violence shelters in the Chicago area.
  • Cubs Care Event - Verizon Wireless served as the title sponsor of the 2002 Cubs Wives for Cubs Care event on Aug.1, 2002 at Goose Island Brewery in Wrigleyville. Cubs' Wives for Cubs Care focuses on raising money for and building awareness of the issue of domestic violence. The public event included an auction and photo opportunities with Cubs players. This year's event raised nearly $100,000.
  • Ticket Bank - The Cubs community relations department has operated a Ticket Bank that provided Cubs home-games tickets to the clients and staff of 15 domestic violence shelters in Chicago. This season, the groups included Family Rescue, Friends of Battered Women, Sarah's Inn, A Safe Place, among others.
