IRVINE, CA — Orange resident Lori Duquette learned how devastating domestic violence is after discovering a close friend was a victim. Seeking to help victims of domestic abuse, Lori decided to take action this past October, National Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Duquette and the staff at Eastside Hair Company/Platinum Strands Salon organized a wireless phone collection drive to support HopeLineSM, a national phone-recycling program by Verizon Wireless that directly benefits victims of domestic violence. The salon received an overwhelming response from Orange County residents during the one-month drive, gathering 393 wireless phones.

Verizon Wireless will refurbish, recycle and/or sell the collected phones for parts, using the proceeds to award cash grants or wireless phones with airtime to human service and public safety agencies to help victims of abuse. As a result of HopeLine, and the company's predecessor phone recycling programs, Verizon Wireless has collected more than 790,000 used wireless phones to benefit domestic violence victims and advocacy groups since 1995. Today, Verizon Wireless stores throughout the country, including the company's Orange County retail locations, welcome donations of no longer used wireless phones, year-round.

"Many women don't know what to do when they are in an abusive relationship," said Lori Duquette. "After personally seeing domestic violence devastate someone close to me, I knew I had to do something to help. I looked into the HopeLine program and thought 'I can do that. I would like to personally thank all of those who donated their phones and extend my gratitude to Verizon Wireless for their HopeLine program."

Verizon Wireless encourages customers who are upgrading their wireless phones, or changing carriers, to participate in its exclusive HopeLine phone-recycling program. Phones that cannot be salvaged are scrapped are disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. Wireless phones and equipment donations may also be shipped to:
