ALBANY, NY — Verizon Wireless and the Albany River Rats will collect no-longer-used wireless phones to benefit victims of domestic violence at this Saturday's River Rats game vs. the Saint John Flames. Through Verizon Wireless' HopeLineSM program, these phones will be refurbished, recycled or sold with proceeds used to purchase wireless phones for victims of domestic violence or to support domestic violence prevention organizations. Wireless phones provide victims of domestic violence with a means to call for help in a threatening situation.

Fans are being encouraged to bring their no-longer-used wireless phones to the game and deposit them in collection bins at the Pepsi Arena. The face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. The River Rats are also offering every person who donates a phone one free ticket voucher to the team's final regular season home game on April 5th.

"By doing something as simple as donating a wireless phone you no longer use, you can truly make a difference for a victim of domestic violence," said John Palmer, president of Verizon Wireless' Upstate New York Region. "Our main community relations focus is to prevent domestic violence, and we are pleased to have this opportunity to use wireless technology for this important purpose."

Since 1995, Verizon Wireless has collected more than 947,000 wireless phones to benefit domestic violence victims. Over 477,000 of those have been collected since HopeLine's launch in October 2001. Phones can be donated either at tomorrow's game or at any Verizon Wireless Communications Stores throughout Albany.
