LAS VEGAS, NV — Continuing its long-standing commitment to domestic violence prevention and awareness, Verizon Wireless today donated 100 HopeLineSM wireless phones with airtime to Safe Nest Temporary Assistance for Domestic Crisis.  April 6-12 marks the national observance of Victims’ Rights Week.

Safe Nest will lend the 100 wireless phones to their clients for use in making emergency calls to 911, to the Safe Nest Domestic Violence Hotline, and also to make appointments and other necessary arrangements associated with transitioning to a new, safer life.  The donated wireless phones each have 3,000 minutes of pre-paid airtime good for a year.

The phones were donated through the company's national HopeLine program, which provides financial support to non-profit domestic violence prevention advocacy groups, distributes wireless phones with airtime to victims of domestic violence, and recycles used wireless phones in an environmentally-safe manner.

“A wireless phone is not only a critical safety tool that can help link victims directly to life-saving emergency assistance, it’s also a means for helping victims to create new lives,” said Tami Erwin, regional president, Verizon Wireless.  “We are proud to provide Safe Nest’s clients with this resource and to put our technology to work in the effort to curb domestic violence.”

Domestic violence prevention and education is Verizon Wireless' chief community focus.  Through the HopeLine program, Verizon Wireless’ 1,200 stores throughout the nation serve as drop-off locations for used wireless phones, batteries and accessories.

As a result of HopeLine and company phone recycling programs organized as early as 1995, Verizon Wireless has collected more than 1 million used wireless phones for the benefit of domestic violence victims.
