LIBERTY, MO — As William Jewell College begins the massive task of rebuilding following the May 4 tornado strike, the College announced today that Verizon Wireless has donated $10,000 to initiate the fund-raising effort to assist the institution as it continues recovery efforts. "We are focused on rebuilding and restoring our campus as soon as possible. The support of the community during this time of need has made it easier for all of us to get through the past few days," said President David Sallee. "Donations like this will be important to ensuring a successful recovery."

"Supporting the community where our employees live and where we do business has always been important to Verizon Wireless," said Mark Crumpton, president - Kansas/Missouri Region, Verizon Wireless. "Together with the Verizon Foundation, we are demonstrating our support of local storm victims by providing a $10,000 grant to begin rebuilding William Jewell's campus."

An outpouring of support from the community has buoyed the spirits of students, faculty and staff as the cleanup effort continues. Wal-Mart and Crowley Furniture in Liberty have also made significant contributions to the recovery, and numerous other companies and individuals are assisting the college.

A volunteer hotline has been established in the Office of the Chaplain. A volunteer center has been set up temporarily in Peters Theater. All volunteers must first register at this location when arriving on campus. Alumni and friends of the college who are interested in participating in the cleanup effort should contact Kristin Cooper at 816-781-7700, ext. 5345 or 5346. Anyone requiring help can call the "Needs Coordinator" at ext. 5695. Those interested in making a donation to the college should contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at ext. 5370.

Crumpton and other Verizon Wireless officials toured the damaged campus at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7.
