CHICAGO, IL — Residents who live in Chicago's McKinley Park and Bridgeport neighborhoods can make a difference in the lives of domestic violence victims by donating unused wireless phones at Verizon Wireless' Fiesta de Verano, being held at Bee Gee Communications, 3166 S. Ashland Ave., this Saturday, July 19.

For each phone collected at the event, Verizon Wireless will donate $5 to Mujeres Latinas en Accion, a local program dedicated to helping Hispanic victims of domestic violence.

"This drive is a natural extension of our HopeLineSM program, which uses previously owned wireless phones to help domestic violence victims in threatening situations go about their day-to-day lives with less fear," said Tracy Nolan, president of Verizon Wireless' Illinois/Wisconsin Region.

Through its exclusive HopeLine program, Verizon Wireless puts services and equipment to work to help prevent domestic violence.  The company collects used phones to be refurbished or recycled and/or sold.  With the funds raised from those sales, Verizon Wireless purchases wireless phones to donate with airtime to victims of domestic violence and makes monetary contributions to local domestic violence organizations, such as Mujeres Latinas en Accion.

Saturday's HopeLine collection will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Bee Gee Communications is proud to support Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program," said Sunny Leon, owner of Bee Gee Communications. "Domestic violence can happen anywhere. It knows no age, race or gender.  By donating wireless phones at Fiesta de Verano, not only will people be supporting a great domestic violence organization in our community, but they will be providing a lifeline that is desperately needed by those being stalked and victimized in violent relationships."

In addition to contributing to the HopeLine Drive, Fiesta de Verano attendees may:

  • Find out how to win a Gateway 42-inch Plasma television, a LG 4400 color flip phone and one year free wireless service, tickets to the Verizon Wireless/Chicago Cubs Hispanic Baseball Clinic or other prizes in the Verizon Wireless Summer Instant Win Program;

  • Win a free wireless phone call to anywhere in the United States or Mexico, courtesy of Verizon Wireless;

  • Enjoy the music, food and fun featured at the event.
