SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT — Verizon Wireless celebrated the relocation of its Burlington store today with donations of wireless phones and cash to Women Helping Battered Women, the Burlington-based advocacy group working to end domestic violence against women and children in Chittenden County. The company donated $1,000, an additional $500 from the Verizon Wireless Women's Cycling Team and 15 wireless phones to be used in emergency situations by shelter clients in the process of leaving violent relationships.
The donations took place during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new store, located at 825 Williston Road (Staples Plaza) in South Burlington. Ted Sigmund is the store's manager. The new location provides more space and a more convenient location to accommodate the growing demand for wireless services in Vermont. Verizon Wireless is now within walking distance of the University of Vermont campus.
"Verizon Wireless understands domestic violence is an epidemic that can devastate our neighbors, friends and co-workers. We will continue to dedicate our resources to both the prevention of domestic violence and the life rebuilding process," said Verizon Wireless Regional President Bob Stott.
"We're very happy that a company as large as Verizon Wireless has made a commitment to raise awareness about domestic violence, said Laura Lubin, Agency Coordinator of Women Helping Battered Women (WHBW). "A lot of people think family violence doesn't happen in places like bucolic Vermont, but domestic violence happens everywhere, and our shelters are in need of funding." Amanda Tucker represented the Verizon Wireless Women's Cycling Team. A Montpelier resident and the only Vermont member of the nationally ranked team, Amanda and her teammates have chosen to donate 100% of their prize money to HopeLineSM, Verizon Wireless' community service program that supports domestic violence shelters in their mission to help victims. The program is rooted in a phone-recycling program. Every Verizon Wireless store across America has a HopeLine kiosk where people can drop off old no longer used wireless phones (from any carrier, including batteries and chargers very helpful) when they upgrade to a new phone. The phones are refurbished or sold for parts, with proceeds benefiting domestic violence shelters and advocacy groups.
