Waukesha Teens, Parents and Educators to Learn Signs of Abusive Dating Relationships

WAUKESHA, WI — Waukesha high school students, parents and educators will learn about the problem of violence in teen dating - what it is, how to spot it and what to do about it - through an informative public program scheduled for Monday, May 3, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the University of Wisconsin Waukesha's "Hub" dining room, 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha.
Hosted by Verizon Wireless, the program will feature a presentation by Dr. Jill Murray, a nationally known expert in the field of teen dating violence. The program is being held in collaboration with the YWCA of Waukesha County, the Waukesha Women's Center, the University of Wisconsin Waukesha, and a consortium of domestic violence agencies, high schools and businesses.
"National statistics show that one in three teenage girls will be in a controlling, abusive dating relationship before she graduates from high school," said Tracy Nolan, region president for Verizon Wireless. "We hope to reduce that number by helping teens, their parents and educators identify the signs of domestic violence and learn what to do when they see the signs."
The May 3 program is part a multifaceted public awareness campaign called "Dating Shouldn't Hurt," which was launched in Milwaukee in March by Verizon Wireless to help prevent instances of dating violence and the spread of domestic violence throughout the state of Wisconsin. Already, free posters from the company illustrating verbal statements that often can precede physical or sexual abuse have been displayed in area high schools.
Dr. Murray, a California-based licensed psychotherapist and sought-after guest lecturer, is the author of "But I Love Him, Protecting Your Teen Daughter from Controlling Abusive Dating Relationships." In connection with her presentations to thousands of high school students and parents nationwide, she has appeared on more than 300 talk shows, including "Oprah," and has been featured in numerous publications, including Good Housekeeping, Teen People, Teen Cosmo and YM Magazine.
As part of the May 3 program, the Waukesha YWCA's Teen Peer Educators, a group of high school juniors and seniors from Waukesha, will perform a skit dealing with teen dating violence. Also performing will be the YWCA's One2One Teen Center dance group.
