DECATUR, IL — A joint effort between Suburban Disposal and Recycling and Verizon Wireless during Earth Week (April 19-23) to collect no-longer-used wireless phones has yielded more than 100 handsets, thanks to curbside collections for Macon County residents.
The recycling effort is an extension of Verizon Wireless' award-winning HopeLineSM program, which collects no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories from any wireless service provider. Most of the phones and equipment are refurbished and sold; then the company uses the proceeds to purchase newer wireless phones for domestic violence survivors and to support domestic violence shelters and organizations. The remaining phones are recycled in an environmentally friendly way, preventing the dumping of waste into landfills.
"Macon County residents have shown overwhelming support of our wireless phone recycling effort with Verizon Wireless," said Eddie Williams, president of Suburban Disposal and Recycling. "To make it easy for residents to support this cause, Suburban Disposal will continue collecting unwanted wireless phones on our residential curbside collection routes."
Williams noted that residents also may take advantage of a special HopeLine drop-box at Suburban's recycling facility at 190 W. North St. in Warrensburg.
"We are very encouraged by the support our recycling program has received in Macon County," said Carolyn Schamberger, public relations manager for Verizon Wireless. "We hope our HopeLine program will prove to be a valuable resource for local domestic violence agencies. Abuse affects everyone. Together, we can help victims escape their abusers and begin a new life."
Suburban Disposal is the first known waste management company in the state of Illinois to offer curbside collections of wireless phones.
