MORRISTOWN, NJ — Verizon Wireless, owner and operator of the nation's most reliable wireless network, has opened a new switching office in Wayne to handle the growing number of wireless calls in Northern New Jersey. The new facility, completed last month, is part of a multi-billion dollar investment the company is making its nationwide wireless network in 2005 to update technology, improve call quality and offer a variety of advanced services such as wireless broadband.

The new switching office serves wireless customers who live in and travel through Passaic County and portions of Essex and Morris counties. Staffed by a small team of network managers and technicians, the switch is the first of two planned for the area this year.

Like all Verizon Wireless switching offices, the facility is equipped with a back-up generator that keeps the call routing hub in operation in the event of a power failure or other service interruption.

"This switch is another huge investment to better serve our customers," said Charles Hand, president of Verizon Wireless' New York Metro area. "Verizon Wireless has invested more than $4 billion annually on the build-out and enhancement of our network since the company's inception in 2000, and last year alone we invested $5 billion, including the build-out of our wireless broadband EV-DO network in Northern New Jersey. Ongoing investment in the network through new switches, cell sites and wireless data technology ensures that we will continue to provide the high quality service customers expect today and in the future."

Hand said the company recently expanded its broadband network, already available from Ft. Lee east to Morristown, south to Summit and East Brunswick, and in some 50 markets across the country, to points in Bergen, Morris, Somerset, Hunterdon, Passaic, Middlesex and Monmouth counties. Called an Evolution Data Optimized (EV-DO) 3G network, it delivers the fastest, wide area wireless data experience in the nation today. The company's new V CAST service, which brings crystal clear short content on-demand, 3D games and music videos to wireless phones from leading and respected news and entertainment sources and other innovative content providers, runs on the Verizon Wireless EV-DO 3G network.

Demand for Verizon Wireless services continued during the first quarter this year as the company added a record 1.64 million net new customers. Verizon Wireless now serves 45.5 million customers nationwide and is the nation's wireless leader in customer loyalty, based on customer retention and turnover rates announced publicly by the largest wireless providers.
