OVERLAND PARK, KS — Verizon Wireless, through the Verizon Foundation, has given a $10,000 grant to Spofford, a Kansas City, Mo.-based therapeutic and preventative treatment facility for children with behavior disorders. The funds will help update Spofford's technology needs.

Specifically, the grant will be used to install a four-station computer lab in support of a children's reading program. It will also fund two staff computers, a printer and wireless access networking at the center's South Kansas City location.

Spofford provides premier preventative and therapeutic services to Kansas and Missouri children ages four to twelve who have severe behavioral disorders due to abuse, neglect and childhood mental illness. Working to connect children, families and the community, the center offers residential care programs, foster care and adoption case management, and school-based case management services.

"Many of the children being treated at Spofford are victims of domestic abuse," said Mark Crumpton, president—Kansas/Missouri Region, Verizon Wireless. "Preventing and reducing domestic abuse is a priority for Verizon Wireless so we are pleased to provide the funds to Spofford and help these children."

"We depend on the generosity of companies like Verizon Wireless and the Verizon Foundation," said Linda Roser, Spofford resource development director. "This grant enables us to address our urgent technology needs so we can provide the best services and learning opportunities for children in the Kansas/Missouri community while they are in residence at Spofford."
