Dallas, TX — Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson opened the Urban League Annual Meeting Luncheon with remarks praising the 39-year-old organization for its contributions to the community . "I sincerely appreciate all the work that the Urban League has done in opening doors and blazing trails for our communities," she said. State Senator Royce West and Dallas City Council Mayor Pro Tem Don Hill gave brief remarks emphasizing the need for Urban League services. Representatives from Verizon, Verizon Wireless and Verizon Superpages, title sponsors of the event presented a check to the Urban League for $45,000.
Two prominent individuals in the Dallas community were honored and the League's Annual Report to the Community was highlighted. The event was held on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The theme of the Luncheon was The Legacy Continues: Passing the Torch.
Dr. Mamie McKnight, founder of Black Dallas Remembered, Inc., a local heritage research and education organization and educator and Al Herron, President and Chief Executive Officer of Century 21 Galloway-Herron were honored for their outstanding contributions in their professions and in the Dallas community. In a special presentation, the honorees passed their legacy torch to Sharon Bracey, computer analyst and teacher and Algernon Herron, Sales Manager at Galloway-Herron Real Estate.
Dr. Beverly Mitchell-Brooks, President and CEO of the Urban League outlined the League's activities and its impact on its clients and the community in a detailed Report to the Community. "Each year we believe it is important to let our contributors, community and friends know how their dollars have enabled our participants to move toward self-reliance", she said. "For not only is accountability required in the cooperate arena, but also in the non-profit world."
New members of the Board of Directors were installed and include Wayne Rustin, Vice President Association General Counsel at J.C. Penney and Cedric Ford, President of the Urban League Young Professionals.
