STATE COLLEGE, PA — Verizon Wireless has activated a new cell site on the main campus of Penn State University, enabling more students, faculty and other area customers to use their wireless phones concurrently to make calls, send and receive TXT and Picture Messages, and download games and ring tones while enjoying clearer reception and fewer dropped calls.

The new cell site increases capacity and coverage across the northeast portion of the campus, including the East Halls dorms, Beaver Stadium and some of the surrounding tailgate areas used during home football games. In addition, the cell site improves coverage at The Village at Penn State and along portions of Park Avenue and Vairo Boulevard.

"During 2005, call volume on our network in Pennsylvania increased by more than 40 percent," said Roger Tang, president—Ohio/Pennsylvania Region, Verizon Wireless. "This new cell site reflects our ongoing commitment to meet the growing needs of our customers and to provide them with the reliable, high quality service they expect from Verizon Wireless."

Nationally, the company has invested $25 billion over the past five years to improve and expand what is already the most reliable wireless network in the United States. In 2005, Verizon Wireless invested $250 million in Pennsylvania to maintain and enhance its network for customers.
