MOUNT CARMEL, PA — Verizon Wireless has activated one new cell site in the town of Mount Carmel in Northumberland County, and upgraded six existing cell sites in nearby Schuylkill County, enabling more area customers to use their wireless phones concurrently to make calls, send and receive TXT and Picture Messages, and download games and ring tones while enjoying clearer reception and fewer dropped calls.

The new cell site in Mount Carmel improves network coverage and capacity within the towns of Mount Carmel and Centralia and along state routes 61 and 54 near those towns.

The upgrades in Schuylkill County increase network capacity in the towns of Pottsville, Minersville, Frackville, Mahanoy, Ashland and Buck Mountain. Capacity also is increased along Interstate 81 from Minersville to Mahanoy; along state Route 54 from Mahanoy to Shenandoah; along state Route 61 from St. Clair to Ashland; and along state Route 901 from I-81 to Minersville.

"During 2005, call volume on our network in Pennsylvania increased by more than 40 percent," said Roger Tang, president—Ohio/Pennsylvania Region, Verizon Wireless. "These network enhancements reflect our ongoing commitment to meet the growing needs of our customers and to provide them with the reliable, high quality service they expect from Verizon Wireless."

The company has invested $30 billion-on average $5 billion every year-since the company was formed six years ago to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new capabilities. In 2005, Verizon Wireless invested $250 million in Pennsylvania to maintain and enhance its network.
