TAMAROA, IL — Verizon Wireless recently donated three "gently used" industrial air-conditioning units to the Village of Tamaroa. The units, valued at nearly $40,000, will enable greater use of Tamaroa's community center, located at 534 W. 2nd North St.

In years past, the center proved an undesirable venue for summer events because the building lacked air-conditioning. But residents and organizations would like to use the center's gymnasium and banquet facilities more frequently for events such as basketball games and volleyball matches, dances, wedding receptions, youth group meetings, graduations, school programs and more. The main building also houses Tamaroa's water department billing office and a food pantry.

Local officials believe the donated cooling system will increase the number of events that will take place at the center each summer going forward.

"We'll now have full use of the community center year-round," said City of Tamaroa Mayor William Place. "This would not have been possible without Verizon Wireless' donation of the air conditioners. On behalf of the Village of Tamaroa, we thank Verizon Wireless for this generous gift."

"Verizon Wireless continually strives to support the people and communities it serves," said Mark Crumpton, president—Kansas/Missouri/Southern Illinois Region, Verizon Wireless. "It's a philosophy I'm proud to put into practice today. Our company's donation to the Village of Tamaroa proves that sometimes making a difference-big or small-in the lives of others is as simple as recycling what's in our own backyard."

The donated units previously cooled a Verizon Wireless switch center in southern Illinois for several years. They are expected to be installed at the community center during the next few weeks.
