BASKING RIDGE, NJ and BENTONVILLE, AR — Wireless customers visiting their local Wal-Mart store this October can help victims of domestic violence and participate in Domestic Violence Awareness Month efforts by recycling their no-longer-used wireless phones. Verizon Wireless, a recognized corporate leader in domestic violence awareness, and Wal-Mart, the nation's largest retailer, have joined forces to sponsor HopeLine® phone donation drives at more than 2,000 Wal-Mart stores throughout the United States.

Beginning the first week in October and throughout the month, customers are invited to bring no-longer-used wireless phones and accessories in any condition from any wireless provider or any manufacturer to the Connection Center at local Wal-Mart stores and drop them into the phone drive boxes. The phones collected by HopeLine, Verizon Wireless' phone recycling program, will be refurbished and sold, with proceeds benefiting victims of domestic violence. At the conclusion of the phone drive, Verizon Wireless and Wal-Mart plan to make a joint donation to a national domestic violence agency.

"As customers visit Wal-Mart for their October shopping needs, whether it is Halloween costumes, fall decorations or to purchase a new wireless phone, we encourage them to bring their old wireless phones with them and help make a difference in the lives of domestic violence victims," said Laura Phillips, Wal-Mart vice president/divisional merchandise manager - Entertainment/Wireless. "We are excited to extend our relationship with Verizon Wireless, a company with a longstanding commitment to the issue of domestic violence prevention, and to offer everyone a chance to make a difference during Domestic Violence Awareness Month," Phillips said.

Domestic violence affects both women and men at home and in the workplace. Funds from the phones donated at Wal-Mart will be used to conduct educational and awareness programs, provide grants to local shelters and advocacy groups and purchase wireless phones and service for victims of domestic violence, supplying them with comfort and security.
