BELLEVUE, WA — Verizon Wireless is expanding its network operations with a new 40,000 square foot state-of-the-art switching center, a digital computer center that will process voice and data communication for customers who live in and travel through King County.

The new switching center in Redmond will process the equivalent of more than 7 million calls each day and like all Verizon Wireless switching centers, is equipped with back-up power to keep the call routing hub in operation in the event of a power failure or other service interruption.

"We are committed to providing the best possible wireless experience," said Kelley Kurtzman, Northwest regional president. "Ongoing investment of Washington's network through new switches, cell sites, and data technology ensures that we will continue to provide the high quality, reliable service our customers have come to expect."

The modern switching center took two years to build and cost $55 million. The company has invested more than $400 million to enhance its Washington network over roughly the last five years, and more than $35 billion across the nation in the past seven years, to stay ahead of customer demand for services like two-way TXT Messaging, Picture Messaging and high speed wireless broadband services like BroadbandAccess and V CAST.

BroadbandAccess provides customers with high-speed Internet access, access to corporate intranets and traditional e-mail functionality via laptop computers and personal digital assistants. V CAST brings video, music, and other multimedia services to wireless phones. Verizon Wireless was the first national wireless provider to commercially launch a high-speed wireless broadband network in the United States.

The company's "most reliable network" claim is based on network studies performed by the real-life test men and test women throughout the country who inspire Verizon Wireless' national advertising. These engineers conduct more than 750,000 voice call attempts and 1.4 million data tests quarterly on Verizon Wireless' and other national carriers' networks while traveling over 225,000 miles quarterly in specially equipped, company-owned test vehicles.
