FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — WHAT:

As part of its commitment to customer service and to providing the most reliable wireless service at all times, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $300,000 in a pair of Disaster Response Units (DRU) to serve as a temporary customer service locations in areas impacted by hurricanes and during other crises.

Each 35-foot long, 300-square-foot vehicle — which were custom-built for Verizon Wireless — features four computer terminals, an air-conditioned canopy area, phone and accessory demonstration areas, and can be set up to serve areas of need in as little as three hours.

With power outages and other communication networks often affected during and after storms, these new DRUs will allow residents in hard-hit areas to be able to reach family, friends, insurance companies and other important contacts for free over the Verizon Wireless digital network.

In addition, Verizon Wireless technicians will staff the DRUs to help residents whose wireless phones — regardless of service provider — have been damaged, lost or drained of power during the storm. Each DRU also will be stocked with batteries and/or chargers, new phones and other accessories residents may need.
